Teacher Job Satisfaction Hits 25-Year Low

Teacher job satisfaction has hit its lowest point in a quarter of a century, and 75 percent of principals believe their jobs have become too complex.

The findings are part of the MetLife Survey of the American Teacher: Challenges for School Leadership. Conducted annually since 1984, the survey polled representative sampling of 1,000 teachers and 500 principals in K-12 schools across the country.

Only 39 percent of teachers described themselves as very satisfied with their jobs on the latest survey. That's a 23-percentage point plummet since 2008, and a drop of five percentage points just over the past year. Factors contributing to lower job satisfaction included working in schools where the budgets, opportunities for professional development, and time for collaboration with colleagues have all been sent to the chopping block.

Stress levels are also up, with half of all teachers describing themselves as under great stress several days per week, compared with a third of teachers in 1985.

Parents aren’t that crazy about the teachers either....particularly the ones having sex with their students.

I was thinking the Principals were disappointed because the teachers were having sex with the students instead of them.

Forcing the Common Core curriculum on the teachers is not making teachers or parents, who know what Common Core is, happy.

..very true

Good teachers are being driven out of education because of Common Core and the socialization doctrine of Full Inclusion --it is setting a match to what was left of public education...

Two close friends of mine (including a niece) who are in teaching have told me that the increased pay and politicization have attracted a lot of unsuitable people into the profession.

When pay was modest, it attracted only people that genuinely loved and cared about kids. Now that it has good pay and a poltical agenda, it now attracts the politically well-connected slimebags who are in it for money and power and could care less about the kids.

Our own school district gets about 150 applicants for every posted opening. By some strange coincience, unless the spot is hard to fill (such as a math, science, special education or foreign language teacher), the "most qualified" hires always seem to have extensive ties to the school board, administration or local union.

1. Teachers are now nothing but micro managed bureaucrats.

2. Government Schools are straight out of Alice in Wonderland where the children are in the superior position over the adults. Kids can act out at will, including hitting and biting, and they know there will be no serious consequences. Detention? Suspension? Expulsion? Call the parents? Hah. The kids laugh in your face.

3. The teachers must, under threat of termination, believe the delusion that all students are going to be collegiate scholars. An unbelievable colossal amount of time, money, and effort is ultimately wasted on the least talented, least capable, the least educable.

No wonder teachers are so unhappy.

You have absolutely described why I quit teaching after five very successful years.

what an effing shock, unhappy teachers.

they got rid of most straight male teachers, you expect the happiness percentages to go UP?!?!

who cares if teachers are happy. they have jobs that are almost impossible to be fired from. nobody moans about their work more than teachers. nobody.

Teacher Job Satisfaction Hits 25-Year Low

Well sounds to me like it's time to leave school, get a real job (40-60 hours a week where your performance counts each and everyday) and get back to me on that satisfaction thing.

The article doesn’t say which of the following is the most treacherous for teachers?

(a) the rowdy pupils
(b) the spineless administrators
(c) the general public who demand lowered standards
(d) their own insufferable colleagues
(e) all of the above
