Ann Coulter Battles John Stossel
The Blaze ^ | 12/22/12 | Becket Adams

Posted on 02/22/2013 11:53:58 AM PST by Mozilla

Conservative talker Ann Coulter appeared Thursday on Fox Business Network’s “Stossel” to do battle with the show’s Libertarian host — and his 1,400+ Libertarian guests.

Their biggest point of contention? Social Conservatism versus the Libertarian “Individuals Should Be Left Alone” approach.

The evening began pleasantly enough, the two discussing whether the U.S. should’ve invaded Iraq following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Coulter believes military action was justified because Saddam Hussein was “definitely looking for uranium from Niger.”

But then things became a little more heated when Stossel decided to shift gears and brought up legalizing drugs.

“Libertarians and pot,” Coulter laughed. “This is why people think libertarians are pu**ies.”

Now although Fox censored the word, Mediaite’s Andrew Kirrel was on the scene and can testify to Coulter’s language.

She continued:

We’re living in a country that is 70-percent socialist, the government takes 60 percent of your money. They are taking care of your health care, of your pensions. They’re telling you who you can hire, what the regulations will be. And you want to suck up to your little liberal friends and say, “Oh, but we want to legalize pot.”

You know, if you’re a little more manly you would tell them what your position on employment discrimination is. How about that? But it’s always “We want to legalize pot.”

Stossel went all in Libertarian versus Social Conservatism: “Why can’t gays get married?”

“Well, they can,” she answered. “They have to marry a member of the opposite sex.”

The 1,400+ Libertarian students, who were there as a part of Stossel’s annual taping at the International Students for Liberty Conference in Washington, D.C., became increasingly hostile, jeering and booing Coulter along the way.

“This is another one where you’re just sucking up to liberals when there are big fights,” Coulter continued.

“No, we believe the individual should be left alone,” Stossel responded.

“Marriage is the most important institution to civilize young people. I make divorce a lot more difficult,” she said. “Liberals want to destroy the family.”

She explained that the left wants to destroy the family so that people will become totally dependent on government.

More jeers and boos.

“How is it any of your business what I choose to put in my body if I’m not affecting anyone else?” one student asked during the Q&A session, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd.

“First of all, for alleged individualists, you’re very mob-like,” Coulter said. “Second of all, it is my business because we are living in a welfare state … Right now, I have to pay for, it turns out, coming down the pike, your health care. I have to pay for your unemployment when you can’t hold a job. I have to pay for your food, for your housing. Yeah, it’s my business!”

Now to be clear, Coulter is no stranger to hostile environments and she and Stossel have long been on good terms. So it was not surprising to see the segment end amicably as the Libertarians students gave her a respectful send-off.

Still, that’s not to say that Coulter versus Libertarianism wasn’t something to see:

I had to laugh when I read this. They obviously haven't watched Ann enough or they would know that she lives on people jeering and booing. She takes the energy and shoves it right back at them. They were simply giving her a boost.

Libertarians are the rinos, it is the conservatives and conservatism who are the hated enemies of libertarians, that is why rinos and leftists all support so much of the libertarian pro-abortion, pro-gay, open borders agenda.

Here is the leftists agenda hidden behind the Libertarian Party curtain.

Libertarian Party Platform:

Throw open the borders completely; only a rare individual (terrorist, disease carrier etc.) can be kept from freedom of movement through “political boundaries”.

Homosexuals; total freedom in the military, gay marriage, adoption, child custody and everything else.

Abortion; zero restrictions or impediments.

Pornography; no restraint, no restrictions.

Drugs; Meth, Heroin, Crack, and anything new that science can come up with, zero restrictions.

Advertising those drugs, prostitution, and pornography; zero restrictions.

Military Strength; minimal capabilities.

As has been explained to you before, "libertarian" does not equal "Libertarian Party."

This was a pathetically weak response from Coulter.

Justifying her support for an intrusive big-government-growing monstrosity of a program but claiming its a necessary corollary to some other big government monstrosities is hardly a conservative position.

A little consistency for the rights of the individual over the intrusive power of the federal government would be nice, Ann.

She's not even consistent in her inconsistency - unless she supports bans on everything with a negative effect on health or employment: alcohol, bacon double cheeseburgers, staying up late on work nights, etc.

Yes libertarians and their party is one and the same, the party is where they have to try to put their ivory tower fantasies into written political form for the public.

Just wrong. The term "libertarian" predates the Libertarian Party by centuries:

lib·er·tar·i·an
noun \ˌli-bər-ˈter-ē-ən, -ˈte-rē-\
First Known Use of LIBERTARIAN
1789

And don't forget:

FR founder/owner Jim Robinson calls libertarians "our good friends".

Stossel should have asked Ann if it makes sense to have the highest prison population per capita in the world just to house drug offenders? I'm with Stossel. If prohibition failed in the 1920s why would it work now?

I thought it was a decent response. Coulter doesn’t support the socialist state we have, she just acknowledges it. I’d be ok with legalizing most drugs, too, IF those who decide to use them are not allowed to come back to “government” (i.e., the rest of us) when they cannot find work, housing or necessary medical care. I suspect that libertarians who want to use drugs will run from their libertarianism when they “need” government.

You are totally correct. I usually detest most libertarians because most of them are really anarchists and won't admit it. I would consider Stossel more of a classical liberal. I agree with Ayn Rand except with her views on religion and the individual. She states that we should act on Reason as it puts us in control of our lives. Really? As far as I can tell, the only thing I can control is myself and my actions. I have no control over the individual actions of others, or the consequences of collective action. So then why would I not seek the counsel of a higher authority, since only He is ultimately in control of everything? I say that respectfully, as I truly appreciate Rand's contribution to capitalist apologetics.

That is why I regard most who call themselves libertarians, as actually anarchists. The idea that we get rid of the police force and each individual takes care of his own security is preposterous. As far as they are concerned there is no nation state, so what the hell, let’s let businesses hire whomever they choose, even if it puts the homeland in peril.

Libertarianism is a cult, with its prophet(Ayn Rand), their holy Scriptures(Ayn Rand’s books)etc.

many Objectivists are hostile to non-Objectivist libertarians in general.

Gosh a word is older than 1971, and JR called libertarians “our good friends” in a 2003 piece damning them and identifying them as enemies of conservatism.

JR-”Perhaps they can draw from the conservatives or Republicans, but they can hope to draw almost no liberal or Democrat voters. So, even if they can draw away from the conservative parties, it will only serve to strengthen the liberals and we will only reinstall Democrats to the majority.”

JR’s quote above, is a good match with what I say about libertarians.

A decade later as we see how rinos are pushing the
GOP to become more libertarian on abortion and open borders, and homosexualizing the military and gay marriage etc, I can give even a better description of libertarians and the Romney movement towards embracing libertarian leftism. “”Libertarians are the commandos of the left, and the new fig leaf for destroying conservatism and America.””

Libertatians are the commandos of the left posing as J. Wellington Wimpy (Wimpy of Popeye fame).

“Please give me the leftist agenda today, and I will gladly support conservatives in ending welfare and social programs on Tuesday.”

Like the Army says, put the leftwing social agenda and cultural war success in one hand, and any hope of ending welfare and social programs in the modern world in the other (after more drugs and immigration create even MORE democrat voters), and see which fills fastest.

He’s a nice guy with good ideas and is generally on our side. The comments about his masculinity in this situation were not nice.

The “closet” is not sexual.. it is about “hiding”.. “faking”.. masking yourself..

Stossel is a libertarian.. who are generally for “license”.. on all(most) issues..
License is chaos.. Stossel is for chaos as are ALL libertarians..
To say they are not is delusional..

The end result of a libertarian government is “LICENSE”...
Libertarians do not have their heads screwed on right...

Basically it is a party for republicans that know the Republican party is dead...
OR for democrats that know the democrat party is evil and sober BUT not evil and HIGH as well...
Libertarians want the right to be DRUGGED.. so they can make good decisions.. /snide

Gosh a word is older than 1971,

Gosh, your equating of libertarians and the Libertarian Party lies in smoking ruins.

and JR called libertarians “our good friends” in a 2003 piece damning them and identifying them as enemies of conservatism.

JR-”Perhaps they can draw from the conservatives or Republicans, but they can hope to draw almost no liberal or Democrat voters. So, even if they can draw away from the conservative parties, it will only serve to strengthen the liberals and we will only reinstall Democrats to the majority.”

JR-"Our good friends, the Libertarians [...] have some pretty good ideas about constitutionality, freedom, Liberty, etc."
