Duncan: ‘Dumb cuts’ from sequester will cost thousands of teachers their jobs By Bernie Becker - 02/24/13 10:44 AM ET

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Sunday that sequestration would have a devastating affect on school systems around the country.

Duncan said that teachers around the country were already being informed that they won’t be retained, and that some 40,000 teachers in all could lose their jobs.

Head Start and programs for children with parents in the military could also be hurt by the $85 billion in sequester cuts, Duncan said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“We don’t have any ability with dumb cuts like this to figure out what the right thing to do is,” Duncan said. “It just means a lot more children will not get the kinds of opportunities and services they need.”

Duncan has joined other members of the Obama administration, like Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, in trying to point out the real-world implications for the sequester, which is scheduled to go into effect on Friday.

The Education secretary added that the debate over sequestration is taking away from what could be more fruitful discussions over how to limit gun violence.

“That’s where I think we should be spending our time, is talking about how we reduce gun violence. That’s the productive use of our time,” Duncan said. “Spending time talking about stupid issues like this in Congress doesn’t make sense.”

Time to dissolve the Department of Education, which has done nothing but lower educational standards for thirty years.

Are teachers paid by the Federal Government or by States?

Try local cities and Counties.

It’s way past time to cut pay for Congress until they pass a balanced budget. Criminals, with very few exceptions.

Get rid of the damn head start. It’s nothing but a babysitter program. In my old hometown...my old grammar school....8 students to each teacher. Ridiculous. And the children are doing crappy besides.

All....We have local school taxes. Then the state passes out funds. Then the Feds pass out funds.

And, he said this also...?????. “That’s where I think we should be spending our time, is talking about how we reduce gun violence. That’s the productive use of our time,” Duncan said. “Spending time talking about stupid issues like this in Congress doesn’t make sense.”

“teachers, cops, and firefighters”

All three are state funded, not federally funded, thus putting the lie once more in Obama’s mouth from which spews nothing but lies.

State and local taxes are supposed to pay for teachers and police, not federal. We need to just eliminate the Department of Education as unconstitutional.

ALL LIES.

No jobs will be cut. They’ve already figured out they can furlough teachers and not cut any jobs. So teachers will get days off without pay, up to 20 days a year in some cases.

They will keep all their fat benefits.

So, once again they will be better off than normal citiznes in the private sector who have lost and continue to lose benefits and jobs.

Cutting teaching jobs would be good for the economy if it is cutting professors of womyn’s studies, environmental “Al Gore” studies, liberal philosophy, etc. I would like to put all these types into the company of the jobless grads who cannot get jobs because they invested in stupid courses promoted by a bloated, corrupt, university system.

What kind of plan would you recommend to encourage American factories, manufactoring, steel, lumber, clothing production and the like?

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone figured out where these Federal Employee techers live and work?

The voters want their free stuff.

And the only people to go after to pay for their free stuff are the productive people, particularly the people who run businesses.

You take away the resources these businesses earned and these business no longer can thrive and expand. They are forced into survival mode trying to just hang on.

Our problems at root have little to do with the GOP or the Democrats. It has everything to do with ignorant foolish voters that are destroying this country at all levels. Voters that no longer have a clue why their country was once great nor the moral/economic abyss of voting to take things from other people in the name of “fairness” in a race to the bottom... A path that has been repeated over and over throughout the world all to the same bitter conclusion... And we are now well on our way for the same ugly ride with nowhere to get off.

Wow, so Arne Duncan admits his own little tin god idol Obama signed these dumb cuts into law!

Where were you, Arne, when Obama was promoting these "dumb cuts"? Were you brave enough to stand up to the clown and TELL him they were dumb cuts, or did you just whimper and lick his feet, like the good little toady?

My sister recently applied to be a substitute at the local school. She [and subsequently I] was shocked to find out that the average class size is 15! Each teacher has a teacher's aide to boot!

Yes. Half of the teachers should be let go. And don't get me started on the clerical, janitorial, and bus-driving staffs.

If teachers are paid via local property taxes, what in $&$#@ does fedgov have to do with it?

(The answer SHOULD be nothing. Sadly...)

Seriously. American factories, and American jobs. Now.

Ain't gonna happen with this administration. Taxes hurt but regulations and employer demonization are killers. Add in a jigger of Obamacare to experience what it's like to run a footrace barefoot over broken glass.

It makes little sense trying to establish a business in this country and this present environment.
