Student Told to Change Abstinence T-Shirt Because it Violated School’s Dress Code
Political Outcast ^ | 2/26/13 | Dave Jolly

Posted on 02/26/2013 8:53:24 AM PST by Sopater

Summer Schreiner of Cocoa, Florida attended the Silver Ring Thing Conference, a Christian event that promotes abstinence only. At the conference, she obtained a t-shirt that read:

“Don’t drink and park… accidents cause kids”
Summer believed in what the shirt said and was proud to wear it to school the next day. Everything was going well for her at Clearlake Middle School until just after lunch. On her way back to class, the 8th grader was stopped by the vice principal who told her to go to the office and change her shirt because it was inappropriate. She was given a t-shirt that read:
“Tomorrow I will dress for success.”
Summer tried to explain that the shirt is not offensive, but that it promotes abstinence, but her words fell on deaf ears. She felt angry and humiliated the rest of the day. When she got home she told her mom, Angela Hogan, who said her daughter had dressed for success. Angela contacted the school and asked them to change their decision or apologize for wrongfully humiliating her daughter.

However, school officials said that they would not change their ruling nor would they offer an apology. Their school dress code forbids ‘clothing which contains sexually explicit, or oriented wording,’ and ‘clothing that infringes on the rights of others.’ According to reports, Michele Irwin, director of communications for the school district said:
“This is not a situation of whether or not the district agrees or disagrees with sexual abstinence among teenagers. It’s about the fact there is sexual innuendo on the shirt, and so we believe it violated our dress code policy.”
A vast majority of public schools, including middle schools are involved with organizations like Planned Parenthood who promote sexual promiscuity. I don’t know if that is the case with Clearlake Middle School, but Summer did say:
“If they teach you about sex in the textbooks and stuff, and that’s in a textbook, why can’t I wear something that is related to it on a t-shirt?”

Had I been Summer, I would have told the vice principal that the shirt saying about dressing for success was offensive to me as it did not insinuate the same set of values for success that I believe in. That’s what I would have done, but then again, I was somewhat of a rebel in school if I didn’t agree with the philosophy or politics being taught.

What you have done? Would you have caved in or stood your ground for your faith?

I wonder how many free condoms they forced into her hand at the office.

Hopefully the parent corrected the vice principals overstepping of boundries and sent the kid to school with the same shirt.
Unacceptable....

i think if you send your kid to a frickin’ government school, you shouldn’t be surprised that there are frickin’ government rules... if they have a rule that clothing with sexual innuendo is not allowed, then hey—it’s not allowed... i think the dress for success t-shirt is kind of funny... but she should have been allowed to have her mom bring her another top instead...

She should have said - no! I will change my shirt.
Why are we teaching our kids to cave and cower on every damn issue.

Hopefully, the parent never sent that child back to that school ever again.

If she changes into a “SCREW AT WILL! HAVE AN ABORTION” t-shirt, will that be ok?

I would have intentionally gotten suspended for what I would have said to the VP and the principal. I don’t brook idiotic rules and statements from anyone. The shirt they made her wear was intended to humiliate and publicly admonish her. That shows how petty and little the school admin is.

Her faith is involved in wearing a T-shirt that speaks of imbibing alcohol and having sex in an automobile, while calling conception an “accident”?

Whatever the supposed abstinence education origin of the T-shirt it was not appropriate. If the T-shirt said “Not before marriage” she could be said to be making a stand for her faith - but “Don't Drink and Park - accidents cause kids”?

What next? She wouldn't want to be “punished with a child” for an “accident”?

The “public school”, including the “charter school”, is BY FAR, the largest, most expensive, most subversive, and most destructive entitlement program in the country.

The “public school” is better understood as the “government school collective”.

It is silly to imagine that you can fix the public schools, because the very concept itself is collectivist.

Any child that comes out of the government school collective with their moral compass and common sense intact does so in spite of the government school indoctrination, not because of it.

If you want to win the culture war, have lots of children (see my tagline) and homeschool them or form your own school cooperative with your church or synagogue and like-minded friends and relatives.

Nobody loves your children more than you do.

Nobody can teach your children better than you can.

Nobody knows your children better than you do.

Your children would love nothing better than to be taught by you, if you start doing so before they are corrupted by the government school collective.

It is hypocritical for you to submit your children to an authority with whom you fundamentally disagree. And your children will know it.

If you have children, make whatever sacrifices you must to get them out of the public schools.

DO NOT FEED THE BEAST!

Especially not with your own children.

And DO NOT TAKE GOVERNMENT “EDUCATION” MONEY!

He that pays the piper calls the tune, and that’s especially true for any government entitlement program.

Beating an old drum but it is still exceedingly relevant, to wit: if mom cared for her daughter she would not put the child in public school.

Change it to a message promoting condoms and the kid gets an award.

By accident is mean “unintended consequence.” But we have grown stupid in our age and so this would have been understood by the under principal, for he thinks only in literal terms. English for him is a foreign language.

I know me.....I’d have 100 abstinence shirts made up and get 100 kids to support it. There was nothing wrong with that shirt....absolutely...and it violated nothing. These schools...it’s all about power.

Cocoa has a large black population.....and it is mostly ghetto....so it would not surprise me that this young woman was told to change the shirt because it would “offend ShaQweatha, whose is pregnant with her juvie incarcerated boyfriends child”

Brevard County is mostly conservative but Cocoa is its ghetto area

I remember kids wearing FRANKIE SAY RELAX tees in public schools in the 80s, to no reaction whatsoever from the admins. Yet “don’t drink and park” is rated X?
