Sandy buyout offer: 169 on Staten Island say ye$!

Gov. Cuomo said yesterday that 169 of 192 residents of Staten Island’s storm devastated Oakwood Beach have taken him up on his offer to buy out their Sandy-ravaged homes.

The people who live in the battered neighborhood have been enticed by a deal that will pay them 100 percent of their damaged home’s prestorm market value — plus 5 percent if the homeowners stay on Staten Island, Cuomo said. The feds will pick up 75 percent of the tab.

“Let’s build back smarter than before, and let’s do it right,” Cuomo said during a visit Monday to the College of Staten Island. “Let’s also recognize that there are some places that Mother Nature owns.”

Did the same thing to a neighborhood here in Pittsburgh. It occupied a few streets along a creek bank, and would literally flood every other year. With all the other available housing nearby it was much cheaper to buy them out than to continue doing semi-annual cleanups.

Which means high rises with ocean view for Section 8 and illegals. They are always good votes for him.

Apparently they had the best kind of insurance. The kind that other people pay for.

Why am I paying for people who chose to be inadequately insured? What’s in it for me? Why am I forced to pay as if I care? I don’t care.

Didn’t see any mention of federal funds in the article but expect that to come in a later announcement. New York and New Jersey are too important to Democrats to not buy additional votes. Sadly other states will probably be asked to foot the bill. If this comes to pass, I sure hope somebody has the backbone to object and strongly oppose in Congress.

"The feds will pick up 75 percent of the tab"

The "feds" means TAXPAYERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, as always, will be FORCED to have their confiscated earnings sent to where they get NO BENEFIT, just to placate the Voters of some crazed Liberal money-grabber.

What in Hell is justifiable about someone elses' problems being dumped on others, just to buy votes?

I am aware of FEMA conditioning their insurance payouts on rebuilding in another location (higher ground). That is a decision they made based on actuarial tables.

Cuomo’s money isn’t FEMA money...its Sandy Pork money.

Did these people have insurance? Homeowners? FEMA?

Quite frankly, why is it the government’s job to intervene in this real eastate situation? If these homeowners are rewarded for not having insurance, what incentive does anyone else have to carry insurance on Staten Island?

I might change my tune (a little) if there are alot of empty lots on Staten Island that these people are going to build on...but I don’t think that’s the case.

I guess it depends... if the house was paid for free and clear...you would need just liability not replacement insurance ...

I certainly hope whatever insurance money is being paid out either goes to the state or is subtracted from the buyout...

I'm sure some politician is getting his palms greased pretty well over this deal....
