Proposed Guntersville ordinance sparks controversy

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) - A proposed disaster emergency ordinance in Guntersville is causing controversy.

The city council and mayor are considering a new ordinance that gives the city more power.

Mayor Leigh Dollar says it would ensure a quick response in the event of a major disaster, like the April 27, 2011, tornadoes.

But it would also give police officers more power.

The ordinance states officers could disarm individuals, if necessary.

Dollar says the proposal is just way to give officers more authority to protect themselves.

"We are not trying to infringe upon anyone constitutional rights whatsoever. It's just to protect the workers working out there in a disaster," Dollar said.

Paul Landry opposes the proposed ordinance. He's a music teacher at the Guntersville Music Academy.

"Well, it seems like an infringement on the 2nd Amendment and that's the biggest problem I have with it," Landry said.

The Mayor says Guntersville needs the new law.

Dollar wants to model after the city of Tuscaloosa where it's already on the books.

The proposed ordinance will be on the March 4th agenda at the next Guntersville City Council meeting.

Nothing like taking away a person’s firearms when they need them the most.

The police do not need more protection from honest citizens.

Guaranteed to reduce the size of the Guntersville police department. I know what I’d do if they tried to confiscate my weapons. This IS Alabama, after all.

It'd nonsense like this from Mzzzzz Leigh why women didn't have the vote.
And sadly many women still shouldn't as they don't think, they 'feel' ('it's for the children').

If Eric Cartman 'Sr' lived in Guntersville he'd probably tell her something like this:

'Hey B**ch! Shut up about guns!'

'Now get back in the dam Kitchen
and bake me some cookies woman!'

Sorry Mam but your citizens have as much right to protect themselves as the police do. Nothing changes because of an emergency. You disarm a violent person you leave the good citizen alone!

I'm guessing that Leigh's iPhone 5 and Blackberry are more important to her than those flags behind her desk.

Go to Hell, Miz Mayor.

As I recall SCOTUS ruled that NO didn’t have the right to seize guns. Since the court has already ruled they can’t do this, why are they trying?

So the mayor and the cops so distrust the honest people of Guntersville that they would bring this tyrany upon them in their time of need and leave them defenseless? Folks can figure out for them selves what should happen to these would be tyrants.

If Guntersville lies in Tornado Alley or Hurricane Boulevard, things could get ugly soon. Those New Orleans vids prove that fascism can rise up locally as well as in the WH.

Maybe her police chief will have to start asking himself whether he feels lucky.

NRA video's of gun confiscation....think it can't happen? Think again.

In the first video, the cops force their way into this lil ol ladys home and tackle her. It will infuriate you.

That sounds like a question that should be posed to the Alabama AG’s office, particularly since the article says that the city of Tuscaloosa has passed just such a law.

“We are not trying to infringe upon anyone constitutional rights whatsoever”

Sure you are. The cops always have the right to disarm an unruly dangerous person and arrest them. You don’t need to pass a statute about it.
