Marinol is pure THC. Turns out THC works better in the presence of cannabidiol (CBD). More research is needed to make make good pharmaceutical which is hindered by its schedule I classification.

If directed THC without the high is useful for some applications that’s great.

They only want the high though, that’s the entire hemp/pot/whatever goofiness.

Sativex is reported to be an excellent medicine that calms spasms in MS patients, etc. Sativex is an herbal extract so it cannot be approved here (try as they might). The high amount of CBD actually counteracts the THC so people really are not after Sativex for the buzz.

But really, so what if somebody wants to get high. I don’t understand this need to control people in an ostensibly free country. I also don’t understand the ethic that people have to suffer because somebody, somewhere might be getting high.

Because it’s addictive and destructive. It makes people lose their ambitions about anything else and end up largely on the dole.

it’s addictive and destructive.

Less so than the legal drug alcohol - of all those who have used marijuana, 9% were at some point dependent, whereas the corresponding figure for alcohol is 15%.

So naturally as a man of principle you favor banning the addictive and destructive drug alcohol. Right?

It makes people lose their ambitions about anything else and end up largely on the dole.

Prove it - keeping in mind that "all the smokers I know are unambitious" is not proof, both because that's a nonrandom sample and because it's at least as likely that lack of ambition leads to marijuana use.

It is available in pill form: Marinol

Already addressed in post #33:

"The poor solubility of Marinol in aqueous solutions and its high first-pass metabolism in the liver account for its poor bioavailability; only 10-20% of an oral dose reaches the systemic circulation. The onset of action is slow; peak plasma concentrations are not attained until two to four hours after dosing. In contrast, inhaled marijuana is rapidly absorbed. In a study comparing THC administered orally, by inhalation, and intravenously, plasma concentration peaked almost instantaneously after both inhalation and intravenous administration" ( http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=6376&page=203)

Several other cannabinoid chemicals available in marijuana - but absent from Marinol - have also been clinically demonstrated to possess therapeutic value. Clinical data indicate that the interaction of these compounds is likely more effective than synthetic THC alone.

"for certain patients, such as the terminally ill or those with debilitating symptoms, the long-term risks [of smoking] are not of great concern. [...] it will likely be many years before a safe and effective cannabinoid delivery system, such as an inhaler, is available for patients. In the meantime there are patients with debilitating symptoms for whom smoked marijuana might provide relief. [...] Until a nonsmoked rapid-onset cannabinoid drug delivery system becomes available, we acknowledge that there is no clear alternative for people suffering from chronic conditions that might be relieved by smoking marijuana, such as pain or AIDS wasting." ( http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=6376&page=7 and page 8)
