FORT MEADE, MD. An Army private charged in the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history offered guilty pleas Thursday to 10 of 22 charges against him and a military judge allowed the soldier to read a statement explaining his actions.

Pfc. Bradley Manning gave a detailed explanation of his actions in a military courtroom Thursday as he entered guilty pleas to sending hundreds of thousands of classified documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, in violation of military regulations but not in violation of federal espionage laws.

Manning said he wanted Americans to know what was going on in Iraq and Afghanistan because he wanted the government to be more transparent.

A firing squad’s too good for him.

By transparent, he means releasing secret information that would endanger the lives of his fellow soldiers.

Hopefully, he’ll be sentenced to a sentence that will result in them carrying him out in a casket.

I just cannot fathom why the brass has allowed this crap to go on. Are they so thoroughly co-opted? If so, we are all in serious trouble.

I have ‘bitterly clung’ to the hope that if zilch ever went overboard, they’d stop him before the SHTF. But id they can’t even get this mess or the Fort Hood fiasco under control, I doubt it.

Yesterday the prosecution said they plan to bring him to trial in June, hopefully they do.

excerpt:

“Prosecutors said that Pfc. Manning’s partial pleas are not connected to any plea bargain and that they plan to bring him to trial in June, according to the NBC News report.”

Sounds like Manning has had a reality check and realized that he will be hosed if he demands a full jury trial.

I suspect a plea deal is in the works that, in exchange for the guilty plea, he will spend the rest of his worthless life plus 20 years in a stockade somewhere.

” but not in violation of federal espionage laws”

Key point. Without espionage he won’t do any serious time.

Prosecutors could still pursue a court-martial on the remaining charges, including aiding the enemy, which carries a potential life sentence.

Another key point and hopefully they do.

I 100 percent believe that Bradley Manning is just the fall guy. There is so bigger sh!t going on that we will never know. No way on Earth can an E-2 be able to pull off what he did. Something stinks big time. He needs to be punished for going a long with it regardless but there are so higher people that should be getting charged too.

No way on Earth can an E-2 be able to pull off what he did.

You clearly have never had a security clearance and/or access to SIPRnet.

He VERY easily could have done this and the only surprise I had was that something like this hadn't happened before.

Forget your mental image of classified information and how it is protected you have from the movies. And keep in mind millions of people, including contractors and enlisted at all ranks, have SECRET security clearances and access to the same data that Manning did.
