Alaska House wants Obama to rescind executive gun actions

JUNEAU — The Alaska House approved a resolution Wednesday that calls on President Barack Obama to rescind 23 executive actions he filed in the wake of the Newtown school shooting.

House Joint Resolution 4, sponsored by Rep. Charisse Millett, R-Anchorage, opposes the executive actions related to guns, criminal background checks and mental health issues.

Millett said the resolution sends “a clear and concise” message to Washington, D.C., arguing that a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t right for Alaska.

Other legislators offered support for the mental health components of the president’s orders, but the House declined to endorse them. Millett and others argued that such action would dilute the opposition to the president’s actions.

The bill passed on 35-1 vote, with Anchorage Democrat Andy Josephson as the lone dissenter.

The resolution is the second time this week that the House has voted to support firearms. On Monday, the House approved legislation that would exempt certain firearms from federal laws and make it a crime for federal agents to enforce new firearm regulations in Alaska.

The rule of law is dead. Alaska, along with the other Res States, should just start ignoring the fed.

I am surprised. Too many people on the dole in AK, but maybe that has nothing to do with Obama and there is no connection to conservative values that includes the 2a.

Too many things in AK that *require* heavier weapons. Or you end up as (say) bear food.

The rule of law is dead. Alaska, along with the other Res States, should just start ignoring the fed. Hopefully they will. Given the size of the bears up there, Alaskans need their guns, for hunting and protection.

Oh, I agree. I can think of several that stop me from moving to AK. (BTW, i am looking to move away from PA. AK is on the list.)

I grew up in Pa; have called Alaska home for over 20 years. Pennsylvanians have no room to talk about Alaska. You all live in virtual slavery to taxes & control by various levels of government excess and you don't even realize it. Worse yet you think its the exact same way, the horror Pa has become all over the country. No state taxes in Ak, heck we don't even have property taxes here in my area; and nearest state police is over 200 miles away, the road is closed for the winter, and hasn't been a shooting in our community for more than 30 years; and everybody is armed 24/7; no gun permits in Ak. When we moved to Ak, I found freedom & peace & fantastic hunting and fishing; something People in Pa don't have a clue exists.

I once got a phone call from an old friend in Pa; he thought life was better in Pa because they had more representatives than Ak; until I asked him why then did Pa always go dem in every election. That doesn't occur in Alaska you know.

In Alaska, our Governors have always directed the state police to disregard many federal laws; I bet that doesn't happen in Pa either. Life will only get tougher in Pa, I feel sorry for you folks.

How about passing a BILL instead of a resolution? Resolutions have no binding....a Bill is law

Only a low info voter cheers on a resolution. They are meaningless. Wake up people

I have friends and a relative who reside in Alaska and I agree with your assessment - still doesn’t explain how the toilet paper on the shoe that goes by the name “Murkowski” managed to do the write-in deal. Alas - no place on earth is perfect, but some are more perfect than others. if I was a younger man I’d probably put on Johnny Horton’s “North to Alaska” song and head there myself.

Miller won the primary, Lisa said she'd honor the primary vote; then changed her story. Lisa went to the big yearly Indian bash in Fairbanks prior to the fall election. She promised them all the gold they could eat if all the dem Indians voted for her as a write in; they did. She won by less than 10K votes I believe. Entire villages of a few hundred registered Dem Indians all voted write in for Lisa in the same hand writing, one guy filled them all out. Couple hundred Indian Villages throughout Ak. Everybody cried foul, but the good ole boy Repub network and National Repub Party (Cornyn) backed her 100% and all the Repub judges up here refused to even consider illegality. But this is the reason why & how Lisa got in. But people don't forget what the repubs did and the repub Party up here now is not trusted, no different than dems. We could have a third party, maybe libitarians win if the right person ran.

Bottomline, anyway you look at it; life is better and people are way more free in Alaska than anywheres back East. Sad thing is the Easterners think it's how it is in their state All over America. They are so wrong and ignorant to accept the slavery and taxation and control.
