AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- It appears the ongoing drought in Texas will keep most rice farmers in three counties from getting irrigation water to flood their fields for an unprecedented second consecutive year.

About durned time! Idiots trying to sustain rice paddies in south Texas during years and years of drought. All that water being sent down to them deprived businesses upstream to close and many towns have had to ship in drinking water.
The water hogs in Austin would rather use millions of gallons of precious water to keep their ugly St. Augustine grass lush in the midst of drought. Why so much water is wasted on growing what South Africans consider to be crab grass is beyond me.

If only the solons of the Texas Legislature had gotten the ball rolling on desalination ten years ago when the Edwards Aquifer was at a previous low point.
There’s lots of water in the Gulf. And we can use it.
How about building water pipelines from the Mississippi to Texas. The overflow frm the storms could lesson the flooding while providing a necessary resource to other areas. Maybe damn it somewhere for hydroelectric power.
You’d have to pump it all the way to Texas and uphill, to boot. Over 300 miles to Dallas, over 400 to Austin from the Mississippi.
Expensive pipeline, let alone paying the pumping electric bill.
Same for pumping desalinated water from the Gulf.
