I’ve used this same line not only with my colleagues, but also with some of my students in casual conversation.... if I can say that I’m a woman trapped in a man’s body, why can’t I say that I’m a Native American trapped in a white man’s body?
There’s actually an example of this in a person named Iron Eyes Cody, the actor who was “the crying Indian” in that famous commercial showing the Indian standing on the side of the freeway with a tear running down his cheek after having trash thrown at his feet. I use this commercial when we’re learning about bias and propaganda. Since most of my students are Alaska Native, they all assume that the guy is Native, too. He “looks like it.” Then we find out he’s Italian! This leads to all sorts of interesting discussions, including the question posed up above about being Native guy trapped in a white man’s body.
The good news is that my students invariably come to the conclusion that, for God’s sake, you can’t change your ancestral history just because you want to. The same goes for gender, according to those same kids - when you’re born one sex or the other, it is what it is. Your denial of that fact doesn’t change reality, and if you’re born a hermaphrodite, well, that’s what it is.
I agree with Jacques Barzun that the “choose your gender” thinking is the product of a dying culture that has gone overboard with the concept of individual rights. (He places animal rights, gay rights, and a host of other “rights” in that category of individualism gone amuck.)
As far as race goes on government forms, I always write “human being.”

Even then, there are no third set of genes. Just sex organs. I will never understand why the anti-homosexualization/Scientific etc groups don’t push the simple scientific fact that as humans, we have the genetic makeup of male or female. Period.
Anything beyond that is personal belief/mental impairment. People can claim to be plant food or Zeta Reticulans. All well and good. But they are genetically male or geneticly female plant food/ZRs.
Then let the ‘free to be anything’ people argue their points based on their ‘desires’.
This child is one of triplets-I don’t know the sex of his siblings-but just suppose in the womb he missed the hormonal bath for boys and gets one for girls. I think we are all born on a sexual continuum. Just like children that are born differently some with cleff palletes, which wonderfully can be corrected, two girls with one body and two heads and different personalities, 4 limbs-And the family has done wonders in accepting both girls and personalities, complications in the future to be assured but I’ve watched them through baby-hood to high school and they are well adjusted personalities. They’ll figure out how to make the best of a not normal situation. That’s what this family with the one triplet who feels he is a girl. They haven’t pushed him, he has pushed them. He’ll find his way with parental support.
My parents were teaching me how to write my name when I was two. They printed “Michael”. I said “Girl name.”
“How do you think it should be spelled?”
I carefully printed MIKEL. They promptly had my birth certificate amended to confirm that.
In a sane world, the parents would be charged with child abuse.

Most (not all) kids today are insolent brats. And their parents are afraid to discipline them. I work in a preschool, in the business office and watch first hand when parents come to pick up their children or come to me to pay their bill. Most of their children are demanding, trying to tear my office apart while the receipt is being written, or whining to their parent they want to go home NOW. If i had acted that way when a child with my Mother (truely unthinkable) my pitiful little life would have been spent in reflecting my stupidity. Don’t get me started with the language that comes out of their mouths. Some of the children are delightful, most not so much.
In a good many of these cultures the men teach the how to be men by using them as sex objects, as with the Spartans and various Melanesian tribes. The boys don't necessarily grow up to be homos by our historically odd definition, but I don't think it's a lifestyle we should be recommending. :)
Liberals take the simple and make it complicated. What sex you are, what bathroom you use, who you get to marry, what a family is. They question every aspect of society and muddy it up, all to satisfy the desires of perverts and wierdos at the expense of normal decent people.
A boy who calls himself a girl in MA will now get to use the girls shower, bathrooms, be on the girls teams etc etc
and girls who complain will be punished
During the last census I got a vist from a census worker. She asked me what race I was (I am Polish/Lithuanian/Scots-Irish with a wee bit of Mohawk, but just not enough for tribal membership). After a while my response was “Hew-mon”

Welcome Kathryn! First off, why don’t you tell us a little about you and your family. I am a mom of 4 amazing, wonderful, awesome children (and one on the way!). Dakota is 5 1/2 years old and has Autism. Coy, Max, and Lily are 3 1/2 year old triplets. Coy is our special little neuro-typical child. Max is also on the Autism spectrum. Lily had a very bad brain injury as a 4 month old and is about like having a 1-2 month old baby, but is so much fun (and feisty!). I work full time at home as Lily’s nurse as well as being a professional photographer outside the home. My husband, Jeremy, is a full time student at two colleges and should be done with school in Spring 2012.

I doubt it was invitro as the three triplets-1 boy, 1 girl-and the transgenered child also have an older sibling and a younger sibling, boy and girl. So the rest of the children in the family are not having an issue with their gender.
