An unbroken series of Democratic mayors followed, all of whom had a hand in implementing the full panoply of progressive policies, highlighted by the giveaways to public service employees. Their outlandish salaries and benefit packages, coupled with highly inefficient work rules, killed the golden goose: the auto industry, and its attendant industrial community headed South, where lower taxes and right-to-work rules kept their businesses afloat.
The same swath of progressive policies destroyed the public school system as well. Perhaps nothing illustrates the corrupting influence of those policies better than the Detroit Federation of Teachers’ success in scuttling a $200 million offer by businessman and philanthropist Robert Thompson to build 15 charter schools in the city in 2003. Ten years later, the Detroit Public School (DPS) system remains a cesspool of failure, corruption and bankruptcy, all of which is chronicled here.
Considering some of the men who have run this city, Detroit’s descent into socialistic ruination should surprise no one. From 1974 to 1993, Coleman Young, who was subsequently revealed to be a member of the Communist Party, was mayor of the city. He failed to stem Detroit’s descent into chaos, and in 1992 his police chief was convicted of stealing $2.6 million from city taxpayers, even as Young defended him. Michigan’s hard-left U.S. Senator Carl Levin was Young’s chief supporter, serving as Detroit City Council president.
Kwame Kilpatrick, who served as Mayor from 2002 to 2008, represents the epitome of corruption. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to two felonies and no contest to a third one, receiving a sentence of 120 days. In 2010, he received a five year sentence for probation violations stemming from his obstruction of justice conviction.

I might get banned , post deleted or flamed but blacks are the primary cause of Detroit’s destruction.
Blacks destroy, raise crime rates and drive business out of every city whenever they become the dominant race.

Mr Thompson, Concrete Magnet, sells business. If my memory is correct, gives employees who help him make it big between 250k and 750k in bonuses and oh ya, a financial planners services to go with it, so you didn't blow it. Another rumor is who funded a 5th grade class to the NASA Space Camp? to the tune of 5 million because it was EVERY 5th grader that year in the city of Canton, the kids are Sophomores in College but we will never know if it was Mr. Thompson, since it was an anonymous donor.
Now when he made the offer for the Charter Schools, the teachers in Detwaa were so pissed about his offer, they took the day off and protested in Lansing. I know one liberal teacher that was so offended she became a right wing loon and left the school system because of it.

I was punching around on the radio on my ride home today and came across some libs on NPR discussing this. The moderator asked what has caused this. The response was a bunch of gobbledygook.
One of them mentioned that Detroit is 80% black. I knew the black population was high but was surprised it is that high.
And therein lies, IMHO, the big difference between Detroit and the rest of the US.

Unless you are “connected”...then, it’s great, while it lasts...and then the locusts move on...
So, how do you fix Detroit? The government is unresponsive, so people don’t pay their taxes. They knowingly vote thieves into office. Even if you fix it now, how do you keep them from voting more thieves into office? How do you keep other cities from doing the same thing?
Remember listening/learning from Mark to this day. He called Coleman a commie and Rush a statist constantly. He was right on both counts.
Sadly, the majority of the black race is unable to lead because THEY can not overcome the color of their own skin. They lead with rage and vindictivness against the whites. There would never be such a study conducted, but if there was, I think we would find devastating numbers that reflect the absurd spending on dead end projects, favoring the black minority. We would find unqualified people placed in positions of authority, simply because of their color and we would find school districts that are utter failures, because of racist black educators. It is all over ths nation and until people are willing to talk about the real truths, nothing will improve.
Yes, but did you figure in the political engineering implemented to drive out those that know better?
Boston's Curley bragged about chasing out those that would oppose him in the first half of the 20th century with higher taxes and other "city hall" methods.
Coleman Young must have had the blueprint.
