Jackson says Supreme Court challenge to Voting Rights Act could be "terribly damaging to democracy"

SELMA, Alabama -- Politicians this morning took the opportunity of the annual pilgrimage across Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge to defend the voting rights legislation inspired by the "Bloody Sunday" confrontation there in 1965.

Vice President Joe Biden is among dozens of national political figures gathered in Selma this morning, just four days after the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments challenging Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

That provision requires states with a history of discrimination to get Justice Department approval before making any change to election procedure. Alabama's Shelby County, which brought the issue to the Supreme Court, argues that it has changed and the oversight is no longer needed.

Speaking before a breakfast that opens the Selma celebration, the Rev. Jesse Jackson called Section 5 the Voting Rights Act's enforcement mechanism.

"An unenforced law is no law, " he told reporters.

Jackson said he has concerns Supreme Court might do "something terribly damaging to democracy in this case."

"What we won by legislation and litigation, you would lose by judicial scheme. You would have more gerrymandering. You would lose elections by the pen -- more annexation, less notice of elections,"Jackson said.

Alabama Senate Minority Leader Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said it is a "great, great concern" what the court might do.

"If you go to the Justice Department you have one more attempt to get justice when you are not getting in at home -- where your state has a history of not doing what was right," Figures said this morning.

The confrontation in Selma in 1965 drew national attention and outrage. Images of officers wielding billy clubs against protestors helped galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Soooo the left wants to steal votes in droves, in Ohio, PA, Florida and wherever the grass grows green.

but just suggest that a voting rights bill that is bias towards one group is unfair, and the dhimmicrat cretins come out of the woodwork to protest.

They complain about the long lines but a state in the south can’t increase the number of wards and precincts to resolve the problem without checking with the Justice department first, who would probably deny it. They can’t institute voter-id without checking with the Justice department first.

Not every provision of every law needs to be kept forever. Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is no longer needed. It should not have been extended. But the congress cowered before the race lobby.

More gerrymandering???? Like the all black district VA was forced to carve out...geography be damned...to guarantee a black held seat in Congress? Here's a map of district 3 in Va held by Bobby Scott...a reknowned idiot.

Good. If there one thing we need to end it is “Democracy.” The United States was not created a Democracy - it was created a Republic!

More gerrymandering????

Apparently it's not gerrymandering if it helps a minority candidate get elected.

Is it still a Republic? I have doubts.

Like I will listen to someone who raised his son to be a crook who stole from the public. Clean up your own house Jackson.

The Klan with a Tan (KWAT) will not go away but has become embolden by fresh new communist blood in the likes of Obozo, Holder, Maxine Waters, FairyCon, Sheila Jackson Lee, Cynthia McKinney...

Time has long passed to allow special rules for those who have lived here all their lives and are still bitching about what happened generations ago. Other minorities have figured out how to succeed even if they came from countries that used a different alphabet yet the KWAT continues to look for excuses for their laziness.

If you are equal as you claim then prove it and stand on your own without special affirmative action (aka government sanctioned discrimination) in every aspect of your lives otherwise your accomplishments will always be viewed with a suspicion you could not have done that on your own.

While you don’t need ID to vote, and you don’t need to carry any ID if your illegal or asked if you are, and you dont have to prove your citizenship to hold high office but we as American citizens have to register and re register our fire arms under new laws forced through by the rats

Libs like Jackson think its great when judges ‘damage democracy’ by overturning abortions laws and laws against dangerous sex practices like same-sex-sodomy, and how about DOMA?
