Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Thursday said he will demand increased participation from school districts in breakfast programs for students.
Malloy visited Macdonough School to announce the start of the Connecticut No Kid Hungry campaign with the Hartford-based anti-hunger group End Hunger Connecticut.
Lucy Nolan, End Hunger Connecticut executive director, said 53 schools in the state have added breakfast programs in the last year, but Connecticut still ranks last in participation in the country and has been last for the past eight years.
She said only 64 percent of schools serve breakfast to students, but the national average is about 90 percent.
Malloy said he and Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor will send letters to the more than 300 schools not currently offering breakfast asking them to start programs.
"I'd like to hear the reason why those schools don't have a breakfast program," Malloy said.

Perhaps the governor should instead demand that parents feed the kids breakfast.
Nah...that would be too sensible.
In our school there are a few kids for whom food at home is a hit or miss thing, but the great majority of kids coming to breakfast are fairly well off and the parents are dropping them off early for convenience sake.
My 10-year old nephew ate 2 bowls of cereal before going to school, he is considered a participant in the breakfast program even though he almost never eats it at school.
Where has this State been we serve 4 meals a day!
Our School System now raises the Kids of the Liberal class!
I would imagine the next step would be dorms so the liberals never have to be bothered with the curtain climbers they have propagated!
Insane. We’ve had discussions like this before, and it’s interesting to note my husband was not provided lunch in his elementary days. I was. None of us had breakfast options. Husband and others had to walk home (the horror!) to get lunch and come back. My God! Dangerous and malnourishing!
So it seems to me SCHOOLS should not be in the business of giving food, anyway. If they could do it then, why not now?
Oh I know. Schools aren’t really schools anymore. They don’t care much about teaching important things. Only teaching stupid unimportant things, applauding children for their self-esteem, never punishing them, and indoctrinating them about sex, The Environment, and Mexican tolerance.
These kids are starving as evidenced by their obesity. Also, if interested, check out the dumpsters after lunch time and observe all the wasted food that is deposited into the trash.
When I went to school I carried a peanut butter sandwich in a brown bag.
Glad to have it.
Parents have no responsibility these days. Kids are fed by the state, brainwashed by the state, and taught sex by the state.
School meals are problematic in urban schools because kids don’t want to get up early to eat breakfast and they dislike the healthy options. It ain’t like the good old days when a free meal ticket would get you a piece of chocolate cake.
How times have changed.
I am the oldest of 6 brats from a dirt poor family. We always ate breakfast before school...at home, and mom would pack us a sack lunch. We wore hand-me-downs. When I complained that my shoes were too big, I was told to wear an extra pair of socks and that I would grow into them. Eventually, we had lunch boxes and I remember how proud I was to have one.
On the days that my mom would put soup in my thermos, she would give me 4 cents so that I could buy a small carton of milk. There were a few times that I saved up those pennies and used the money to buy candy on the way home from school.
I think I was 10 before I realized I was poor and even then... it was because other kids told me I was. By the age of 12, I had two paper routes, my own lawn mowing business, picked strawberries during the summer and bucked hay for the landlord.
Somehow I have made it to 64, supporting myself....... and I have never been in prison. It wasn’t that bad.....
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. Kids need a good breakfast before they go to school, fixed by an adult who needs to take the time to sit down, have a quick prayer and join them before everybody goes their separate ways.
Even the little ones can make a sandwich, add an apple or banana, a bag of chips and a cookie or two to a brown bag the night before. This is a parent’s responsibility and no, they are not too busy. If parents would take care of their own kids in the first place this would never have happened.
heck you buy a plastic contanier with sandwich, chips, fruit and juice at the store for not that much, cheaper to make it yourself of course
and of course those would end up being coed dorms and unisex facilities
Here in Indiana, they even serve breakfast and lunch when school is on summer vacation.

Probably because they hate kids, you dolt.
Why? When my kids got old enough to stay by themselves they fixed their own lunch. Hot dogs, leftovers from the night before.
You can make up enough pancakes and sausage on Sunday morning in no time at all, roll them up and freeze them and then the kids can heat one up in the microwave and have a pancake and sausage every morning.
Good grief.
If you stood next to the trash bin, when the kids file out of the cafeteria after *breakfast*. Throwing out unopened milk ....unopened muffins.......whole pieces of fruit.
It would make your blood boil.
There has been a movement to have the PS open 365/24/7.......as community centers...available to families for medical, dental, mental, social, recreation...........AKA shelters/barracks for the unwashed.
Title I schools are preferred by principals.............Cha-ching! They get additional federal funding.

I wish that there was an auditing procedure in place, so principals would be more accountable for how they use the $$$.
