In a measure the state said would help stop massacres like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut in December, so-called "school sentinels" will be tasked with protecting children.
The controversial measure was signed by Governor Dennis Daugaard, a Republican, and will go into effect on July 1.
It reflects a growing divide between those including President Barack Obama, who believe guns need to be more strictly regulated, and supporters of the National Rifle Association who argue that more guns keep people safer.
In South Dakota, supporters of the "sentinel" plan argued that schools in rural areas were too isolated to expect immediate help from police in the event of an attack.
They could not afford to pay full time security officers to protect them, so they want to arm teachers and volunteers.

Under the new law school districts will decide in a public meeting whether to arm teachers. Residents will be able to force a public vote if they disagree with the decision. Teachers will not be forced to carry a weapon against their will and will receive firearms training.
Mr Daugaard said: "I think it does provide the same safety precautions that a citizen expects when a law enforcement officer enters onto a premises."

“Controversial”? What’s controversial about it? It’s awesome. What Colorado is trying to do is controversial. South Dakota is a great state, spent some time there. In summer ;)
Let the HS kids bring their guns to school and leave them in their vehicles (LIKE BACK IN THE DAY).
A sheriff has the power to appoint volunteer auxiliary deputies, train them in the use of arms and station them in schools. For me, that’s a perfect solution that costs little money. Retired vets and cops could fill that role.
Rapid City, et. al. can be fine in the Winter.

Almost seems to good to be true. Sanity at last?
Rapid City, and the Black Hills, are wonderful in the winter, contrary to popular opinion. It seldom drops below zero and has many warm spells. We have been able to golf every month of the year.
But, I wouldn’t want to live in the central or eastern part of the state. Nothing to stop the wind there.
Mr. RR and I have spent the past six weeks in Arizona. Had more snow and colder temperatures here than at home.
Another positive. Western SoDak is solidly conservative.
Me too.. we settled our family here almost two years ago and couldn’t be happier. A great place to live :)
I did visit friends in Pine Ridge; not so good. But I couldn't visit the state w/o doing so. I love SD.
(We also went to Antiques Road Show there a year ago.)
South Dakota is like Texas was when I was a kid. Still a lot of folks here who don’t bother to lock there cars or homes.

We should get together sometime. The Gaslight Inn in Rockerville has great Prime Rib at a very reasonable price. And it’s only two miles from our home.
