San Francisco cops dodged a real bullet the other day when one of their AR-15 rifles wound up in the hands of an East Oakland gang after being stolen out of the trunk of an unmarked police car.
The prospect of a police semiautomatic rifle being used in a violent crime prompted a Code 3 response once officers discovered the theft last weekend South of Market.
Police Chief Greg Suhr immediately put out word to start questioning every street source they had.
"No resources were spared," Suhr said.
Asked exactly how they traced the rifle, the chief told us that "it wouldn't be in the best interest of future cases to give away trade secrets."

So they had to buy the rifle back from the gang bangers? Great police work.

I would guess this AR-15 since it was a police weapon had a full auto option.
So they know where the gangs are, they know who has weapons, they could track, trace and retrieve one particular gun... ???
No one is arrested? No other guns or weapons are retrieved? No questions asked? Tomorrow is business as usual ?

I wonder how many confidential informants and undercover officers were burned in the process of getting that weapon back.
Funny they cannot solve all of the crimes so easily, perhaps the priority makes a huge difference, The don’t set much priority on anything stolen from individuals.
And if it were my property that had been stolen? Would there be no resources spared?
Yes, SFPD would use all their resources to search your home for what they consider contraband, (like cash, guns, jewelry) and they would confiscate said "contraband" in the hopes you can't get to a reasonable judge within ten days.

No resources used would be more like it.
Police carry/are armed for self-protection not yours. Police are under NO legal obligation to protect you or your property. They exist solely to enforce the laws. If within that enforcement duty they happen to protect you and yours then that would be a ‘benefit’. The police wanted that weapon returned mainly for THEIR protection and not necessarily the public’s. In the instance your property is stolen, no PAPER resources would be spared.

Some wit could cause great consternation by suggesting that the thieves didn’t steal *a* rifle, but a rifle rack full of rifles, that are still missing.
To make it more confusing, the early AR-15s were select fire, before they changed the name to M16. The AR-15 name came back with the civilian semi version.
