America's Rifle: Rise Of The AR-15
Hart\ford Courant ^ | March 9, 2013 | Dan Haar

Posted on 03/10/2013 4:32:02 PM PDT by Daffynition

When his son turned 14 a year ago, Jonathan Hardy bought the teen a gift that was both a coming-of-age badge and a hot item: an AR-15 rifle.

To Hardy, the matte-black weapon is not a dangerous assault rifle. His son's model shoots the same small, low-powered bullets used by youths for decades.

The allure of the AR-15 — the main gun used by the shooter in Newtown — has nothing to do with the rifle's firepower, as far as Hardy is concerned. Rather, it's the gun's modular design, light weight, ease of use, low recoil and extraordinary flexibility that draws him in.

"It's the perfect rifle," said Hardy, a New Britain resident and certified firearms instructor who is active in the debate over gun control. "It can grow with him as he grows. ... As his needs change, it can change."

FP, above the fold story today in the HC.

**How and whether Newtown's aftermath affects long-term sales of the AR-15 remains to be seen. Stag Arms owner Mark Malkowski, Veilleux [CEO, Colt's] and others in the industry will not speculate on the effect of possible legislation on sales.

"I did listen really closely to everything that was being said and I did reflect really deeply on my role in firearms manufacture...in the community," said Veilleux, who has two school-age children. "At the end of that reflection I feel confident that what I'm doing is not contributing to making this place less safe."**

“The allure of the AR-15 — the main gun used by the shooter in Newtown . . . “

How many times do we have to remind these idiots that an AR-15 was NOT used in Newton!!! The rifle was found in the trunk of his car after he had already shot the children and killed himself inside the school! The shooter never brought the AR-15 into the school or fired it to kill a single child!!!!

Wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Americans have a tendency to like whatever their military rifle is. I guess other countries probably do the same, for instance Canucks like their SMLEs

I remember a Jeff Cooper article many years ago. He said he preferred the Garand over the M-16. Then he admitted that his old Marine Sergeant thought the Garand was a gimmick and the O3 Springfield was the better rifle.

Then I guess the investigation into the use of an AR-15 at Newton was just another lie when LE all stated the AR-15 was NEVER fired! I guess if you tell a lie enough, it becomes the truth to some:

CBS, NBC, ABC Admit No Assault Rifle Used at Sandy Hook

Americans have a tendency to like whatever their military rifle is.

There's that, plus the fact that people will like it because the government wants to ban it. Whenever someone gets up and decries what an evil weapon it is, and wants to ban them, a significant portion of the people who hear that think, "Cool, I'll buy two then."

So, is there a 22 rimfire version of the AR-15? Or is this just more media misinformation?

Placemarker ... no wonder this nation is sinking into the fen of democrip controls. Once a lie is spewed forth from the media, too many take it as gospel and ignore later facts which contradict the official lies.

Ditto, but there was so much incorrect reporting of the story it is a wonder that anyone knows the correct story.

Well, there is, now.

But more likely, the idiot reporter has confused .22lr with .223 because they're both .22 caliber.

I guess it's too much to ask for a professional journalist writing about guns to learn the difference between "caliber" and "cartridge."

Outstanding Article.I didn’t detect a bit of Bias in it at all.

Though I would like to see Colt’s come along stronger and support our Civil Right guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

And I replied before I read the article, so the bot does have an AR with a rimfire upper. As the article states, he can add a centerfire upper later.

There are dedicated .22lr ARs now, as well as rimfire upper receivers.

Of course, they have been .22lr conversion bolts almost since the military started using the M16.

Don’t just dismiss this out of hand, where is YOUR proof that it is “incorrect!” ABC, NBC, and CBS have NOT claimed an AR-15 was used at Newton since this investigation was conducted! This fact does not fit the liberal socialist push for gun control and a ban on “assault weapons” so the lie that an AR-15 was used at Newton keeps being repeated as fact when in FACT, it is NOT true.

Everyone agrees that when it comes to rifles, the AR-15 is the "it" gun. But there's less agreement on how that happened, and what it says about our society. Opponents say the firearms industry foisted the gun on the public using ads laden with military words and images.

And those same people will swear hyper-violent and -sexual movies and video games have no effect on anyone at all.
