America's Rifle: Rise Of The AR-15
Hart\ford Courant ^ | March 9, 2013 | Dan Haar

Posted on 03/10/2013 4:32:02 PM PDT by Daffynition

When his son turned 14 a year ago, Jonathan Hardy bought the teen a gift that was both a coming-of-age badge and a hot item: an AR-15 rifle.

To Hardy, the matte-black weapon is not a dangerous assault rifle. His son's model shoots the same small, low-powered bullets used by youths for decades.

The allure of the AR-15 — the main gun used by the shooter in Newtown — has nothing to do with the rifle's firepower, as far as Hardy is concerned. Rather, it's the gun's modular design, light weight, ease of use, low recoil and extraordinary flexibility that draws him in.

"It's the perfect rifle," said Hardy, a New Britain resident and certified firearms instructor who is active in the debate over gun control. "It can grow with him as he grows. ... As his needs change, it can change."

“Everyone agrees that when it comes to rifles, the AR-15 is the “it” gun.”

That would be a NO. The AR-15 is a light weight and low in recoil — those are definite pluses. The AR-15 platform is a modular platform that can become a customized rifle or carbine to suit anyone’s desires, but it is not the only rifle.

Its big brother, the M14 (aka M1A for civilians) is a 7.62 NATO main battle rifle that has been developed into a very nifty precision rifle, carbine, and special purpose firearm. If push comes to shove, I prefer the M14 (M1A) because of its punch and range.

For the manufacturers in CT, I'd tell these oafs in the state legislature and governor's office that you've had enough of their crap and your company is moving to a firearms friendly state. You're taking your best workers with you. Screw CT politicians and the horses they rode in on. Screw CT taxes (our companies and employees are taxpayers and you're not getting our money any more). Are you listening? Goodbye to Colt's Manufacturing Co., Sturm-Ruger, O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Marlin Firearms Co., Widley Guns, and Stag Arms.

I own three Ar-15 rifles. 2 of them have 16” barrels chambered for 5.56x45MM Nato, one being a heavy barrel 1:9 inch twist and the other a lightweight barrel 1:7 twist. The last one is an AR-15 upon which I have replaced the upper reciever with one from Chiappa arms chambered for .22 LR ammo, and you cannot tell that it is not a standard AR-15 unless you pull back tha bolt and look at the bolt carrier, which is a strict blowback design rather than that of the turn bolt locking lugs found on the bolt and barrel extension of the far higher chamber pressured standard 5.56x45MM chambered AR-15. It saves hugely on ammo costs and is great for hunting small game.

I also have an upper reciever from Rock River Arms chambered for .458 SOCOM which uses a slightly altered bolt and reciever and uses standard AR-15 magazines, holding 10 rounds in a 30 round .556 magazine. I can use THAT one to take down a grizzly bear or a 500 lb hog. ALL of these lower recievers can be swapped onto ANY of the other upper recievers in 15 seconds or so by simpoly pushing out two pins, attesting to the extraordinary modularity of the AR-15 M-16 rifle. It is the Barbie doll of rifles for men. An infoinite variety of calibers can be swapped such as the ,450 Bushmastewr, .50 Beowulf, and 6.5 Grendal. This list is by NO meaNS COMPLETE.

My rifles have quad sided Weaver rails onto which I have placed red dot holographic sights, 4X magnifiers, red lasers, and tactical 4X illuminated scopes with quick detach levers, and vertical foregrips with integrated white lights from UTG. They are zeroed for spot on targeting at 200 yards and have sub MOA accuracy.

The AR M-16 rifle is one of the finest engineered firearms EVER. Within the limits of its 5.56 cartridge envelope, you WILL hit what you aim at if you employ proper shooting technique.

You, my friend, are exercising your 2nd Amendment rights.

Sen. Feinstein should be impeached for violating the oath of office that she took prior to entering the U.S. Senate as a Senator from California. Part of that oath requires her to uphold, support and defend the Constitution (which includes the 2nd Amendment) of the United States of America.

This is where we as Freepers need to get involved. Contact our U.S Senators and Representatives and demand that something be done when their peers in Congress start to work towards eliminating the provisions of the 2nd Amendment.

Rise? The AR15 is 50 years old! The first ones are now officially “relics”.

Saiga, wasn’t it? I’d like to have a Krebs Saiga but imagine they’re selling at a premium now.

Look for the video of them removing the long gun from the trunk. It is not an AR-15. Looks more like an AK-action shotgun (Saiga?)

Many initial media reports are incorrect, or do you still think it was his brother that carried out the attacks since CNN plastered his face on the news during the scramble?

5.56x45mm isn't a 'low-powered' cartridge. There is no need to engage in the same egregious hyperbole as the Left. 5.56x45mm NATO is an intermediate round. Let's not try and convince anyone this is a gussied up .22LR

I only wish the ammo was as cheap and available...

Right. The victims were shot with the Bushmaster. He shot only himself with a pistol

The Coroner reported that the Children were killed by .223 Rounds, not 9MM or any other Pistol Rounds.

It's a wonderful conspiracy theory, but it just takes the spotlight off the responsible party, the Murderer, and it makes the Gun the issue. Don't play the Gun Grabber's game.

As Rush says, we live in Realville, the other side lives in Obamaville.

I read it as the kid’s Rifle is an AR-15 / .22 Caliber, not a .556 Caliber. I think that is what they were referring to.

I got to shoot my son’s AR-15 a few times in the last couple of months. He has an alternate chamber and high capacity magazine that enables it to shoot .22 LRs. We were getting off a coupla dozen rounds, much cheaper than the .223s that are far more powerful. But the shooting was fun.

Our only problem now is finding .22 rounds.

I would think you would prefer a AR in .308 then as it is more reliable and more accurate than an M1A/M14.
