I wonder if the Norks realize that with today’s advanced weaponry, the destruction from a new war would be far worse than the destruction from the first war. Seoul would suffer serious damage, but Pyongyang would be turned into a smoking crater.

“but Pyongyang would be turned into a smoking crater.”

Can you see Obama ordering the bombing of North Korea? I can see a sharply worded diplomatic note about the destruction of Seoul. I can see an extended aid package for the North. But no bombing.

Nope. If he did, it would be the FIRST thing he ever really did FOR America since becoming pResident. It would be a trend breaker except for the fact that Kim Un probably can't see Obama bombing NK either which is probably why we are where we are today. They know Obama as the world sees him.

...preferring instead to try to gain traction through threats and the buildup of its military deterrent.

Build up its military how? Who is willing to sell to them?

The little thug in North Korea knows full well that if war comes he will die quickly. Probably by the hand of his own generals who know the purpose of the whole North Korean charade is to maintain their power and privilege. However as a matter of prudence the US should (but under Obama won’t) disarm then forcefully of their nuclear weapons and development capabilities. Also any ship that has docked in North Korea should not be allowed within 500 miles of the US. Also any cargoes on any ships leaving North Korea should be carefully scanned. The US can thank Jimmy Carter’s ridiculous meddling in 1994, the ineptness of Clinton and Bush’s inaction for this current nonsense.
