Gun Owners Go To (CT) State Capitol To Protest Proposed Reforms
The Hartford Courant ^

Busloads of gun owners went to the state Capitol complex Monday to publicly express their opposition to new gun-control measures following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

But one of the state's most prominent gun-rights groups is already looking beyond the political battle and preparing for a legal one should lawmakers pass the sweeping restrictions supported by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and the legislature's Democratic majority.

"We would be remiss if we weren't looking at all options and all responsibilities," said Chris Duffy, events coordinator for the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, a nonpartisan gun rights group with more than 4,000 members. "We are working on a plan of action and we have set aside a certain amount of money from our coffers for litigation as a prudent measure."

Still, Duffy and other gun-rights supporters said they hope their voices will be heard by lawmakers crafting the legislation. The "lobby day" was organized by the National Rifle Association, the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen and the CCDL, which offered free shuttle buses between the Capitol and Cabela's in East Hartford.

Organizers put the crowd at 3,000 people, but state Capitol police did not provide an official estimate.

Paul Zukowski, a 49-year-old musician from Hartford, dropped off letters to his legislators, Rep. Angel Arce and Sen. John Fonfara, urging them to focus on mental health services, not gun policy.

"It's more likely that you would be hit by lightning than shot by a rifle in this state,'' Zukowski said. "These people are demanding things for no reason."

Gun-control opponents aren't the only group that will have a presence at the Capitol this week. On Wednesday, Connecticut Against Gun Violence will hold an event in advance of a planned online, print and radio ad campaign in support of new gun laws.

The key is to go up there en masse on the days they are considering the bills. Flood the legislative building and the grounds around it and LOUDLY let them know that you do NOT support gun control.

Gun Owners . . . Protest Proposed Reforms

Infringing on our God-given rights is described as "reforms" by these journalists? That is pathetic.

PUBLIC HEARINGS in HARTFORD, Thursday March 14th from 10am in Room 2C of the LOB.

See you there!!

Pay special attention to SB1076, it's a doozy of new gun-grabbing regulations, but nothing to do with "the reduction of gun violence."

Well, well. The Capitol police got trumped. Heh. B/c the pro-gun organizers *counted* the people getting on the shuttle buses, and had a sign-in table at the LOB.

Smart cookies,b/c at the last rally the paper was quoting the state police estimate as *hundreds*...when it was actually more than 3K....perhaps closer to 5K.

Thanks to all who went....good showing!

Panelists include:

There’s been little doubt since Newtown that the tragedy would change Connecticut’s gun laws, already among the nation’s strictest. But how will these laws shape up? The forum is free and open to the public. Anyone wishing to reserve a seat should call 860-280-3130. Limit two tickets per reservation, space is limited.

The public is being asked to submit questions for the panelists prior to the forum by emailing them with your name, address and daytime phone number to opinion@courant.com
