Tuesday was a banner day for Gulf Coast industry as the U.S. Navy announced it awarded Northrop Grumman Corp. a $71.6 million contract to produce the next generation of Fire Scout unmanned helicopters, assembled in Moss Point.

In addition, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Lockheed Martin Corp. will invest $3 million and create 166 new jobs to build tanks for liquefied natural gas at the Michoud Assembly plant in New Orleans, where the space shuttle tanks were built. The initial 88-foot-long tanks will be used to fuel ships and transport fuel.

And at Chevron's 2013 Security Analyst Meeting on Tuesday, company officials said the base oil plant in Pascagoula is scheduled for startup later this year.

"When the Pascagoula plant comes online, we will be the largest supplier of premium base oils in the world," Mike Wirth, executive vice president for downstream and chemicals at Chevron, told investors. The transcript of the meeting was released by Seeking Alpha.

The new model, MQ-8C, is an endurance upgrade from the MQ-8B currently in use at sea and in combat at Afghanistan. It just completed 8,000 flight hours this week. Vardoulakis said the new model is 6,000 pounds at takeoff and has increased range and an endurance of 15 hours of flight, more than double that of the MQ-8B.

Defense spending Keynesianism is as bankrupt an ideology as infrastructure spending Keynesianism or social spending Keynesianism. They’re all a drag on the economy.
