Jesuits are distinguished by their depth of intellectual preparation. They led the defense of Catholicism against Protestantism on the basis of rational arguments, as opposed to just dogmatically asserting authority.

They were successful in many ways, in some cases incredibly successful (one Jesuit founded over 600 educational institutions). At one time it was said that behind every monarch in Eurpoe, was a Jesuit whispering in their ear.

The training of a Jesuit, called their “formation” is the longest of any Catholic religious order, despite having been shortened in this generation. They spend a long time with formal education, developing secular expertise, and engaging in their unique “Spiritual Exercises” of introspection and analysis, which are designed to produce a clear understanding and rock-solid foundation of certainty in the tenets of the faith. Many times, their conviction itself was famously influential. Several famous martyrs in bringing Christianity to the New World and China were Jesuits.

From their solid foundation, Jesuits are prepared to meet people of any background and make the case for Catholicism from any frame of reference. They are famous for their ability to make clever argument or being able to resolve conflicts with artful interpretations.

Pope John Paul II was fundamentally opposed to Communism, and opposed to the Marxist subversion of religion under the doctrine of Liberation Theology. The new Pope is among those that he made into Cardinals, while he was consciously shaping the future of the Church by grooming and promoting talent that could lead in defense of traditional ideals (Benedict was even more active in packing the college of cardinals).

Pope Francis was definitely not on good terms with the lefties in his religious order, or in the Government of the country where he lived - lots of head knocking. So I am hopeful that he can bring some Jesuit-style ideological jui jitsu to get some old line liberal clergy flying right (running charities instead of political organizations), and get in some efficient management to clean up the headquarters. Time will tell.

It didn’t work out so well with Galileo.

That's a common conclusion reached by those ignorant of actual history but who instead are magna cum laude in what gets passed off as actual history by the DLEMM - Dominant Liberal Establishmnet Mass Media.

You'd be well served to start learning the truth about Galileo Galilei.

That whole screed pretty much reads...Galileo was asking for trouble.

>In fact, Galileo erroneously believed that the tides were proof of the earth’s rotation. He ignored Kepler’s discovery that the tides were actually due to the attraction of the moon.

Well I don’t know what the author is really trying to say here, but unless the moon is making a lap around the Earth every 24 hours, the Earth’s rotation makes the tides happen when they do.

That whole reading certainly highlights the notion that back then a lot of people in positions of power should not have been.
