ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - An upstate New York man previously charged with having child pornography cut an electronic monitoring device off his ankle before carjacking a woman, fatally stabbing her and raping her 10-year-old daughter, authorities said.
David J. Renz, 29, abducted a school librarian and her daughter as they left a gymnastics class at a mall in the Syracuse suburb of Clay at about 9 p.m. Thursday, state police said Friday.
Troopers said he bound both victims, raped the child and drove a short distance to a spot where the girl managed to escape and was found by a passing motorist.

On Jan. 29, a judge granted a prosecutor's request for an extension of the time required for grand jury action so investigators could continue going over "numerous items of electric media" for additional evidence.This is a guy that had THOUSANDS of videos and photos of small girls engaged in sex play.Renz, who authorities said had no prior police record, was released after agreeing to stay at home at night with an electronic monitor and away from any place he might encounter people under the age of 18.

People are inclined to cite studies showing that capital punishment has no deterrent effect; if true, I suspect this is a fairly modern development coincidental with the doing away with public executions.

Of course it is, but IMHO, the deterrent effect is irrelevant. It is a fitting punishment for the deliberate and intentional taking of an innocent life, and should need no further justification than that.

I went to HS with a girl who was stabbed along with her mother during a home robbery by a stranger. The mother died but the teenager survived. Even with the best of care and a great supportive network, she still has problems because of the incident, and this is now 35 years later. I’m afraid that the girl in this news story will always be scarred, but I pray for her best recovery.
I agree. Something “died” in your friend that day and I think people may forget that. Such trauma... even with help, a supportive family, counseling, you name it.. it doesn’t go away, does it? That is why, IMHO, this man should be executed. He not only killed the Mother but “killed” the daughter that day. I, too, pray for her best recovery.

It certainly has the attrition effect. There aren't that many hardened, violent criminals who cannot be suffered alive. The policy of "catch and release" just produces better criminals, often with revenge in their minds.

I read that even in olde times, when public executions were the norm, most criminals were sure that *they* will never be caught. True or not? On one hand, crime then was so high that no nobleman would ever venture out unarmed; bodyguards were often present. On the other hand, law enforcement was often left to the same noblemen and their soldiers. The city guard was not very efficient, poorly paid, and was largely focused on staying alive.

Actually “Freakonomics” claimed (I don’t know how you can “prove” it one way or another) that executions were fairly effective in preventing murders with each execution preventing about six murders.
Now, just imagine the impact if executions were TIMELY and PUBLIC.
A lottery to raise funds so that the government has more money to spend is no kind of solution to a debt crisis. We need to starve the beast, not hold a food drive for it.
