JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African cardinal who helped elect Pope Francis this week has told the BBC pedophilia is an illness and not a crime.
Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, the Catholic Archbishop of Durban, told BBC Radio 5 on Saturday that pedophilia was a "disorder" that needed to be treated.
"From my experience, pedophilia is actually an illness. It's not a criminal condition, it's an illness," he said. Napier said he knew of at least two priests who became pedophiles after they were abused as children.
"Now don't tell me that those people are criminally responsible like somebody who chooses to do something like that. I don't think you can really take the position and say that person deserves to be punished. He was himself damaged."
The Catholic Church has had its image deeply tarnished by a widespread child sex abuse scandal. Napier was one of the 115 cardinals in the Vatican conclave that elected Pope Francis on Wednesday, the BBC reported.

Pedophilia is an illness, not a crime, as long as the pedophile doesn’t act on his desires.
The minute he touches a child, he’s a criminal, and should be punished severely.
most of the scandal in the Catholic Church isn’t really about pedophilia. It’s gotten that tag in the media for a reason; to take away from the fact that it’s really homo priests wanting to have sex with teenage boys. “Pedophilia” conjures up images of creepy old men molesting little girls, which is not what the bulk of the scandal is about, and the media knows it.
In any group you’ll find the occasional fool with big mouth. The Catholic church is no different in this respect from the Fraternal Order of Police or the Hunting editors for Outdoor Life.
Of course that fact won’t slow down the Catholic bashers who will take the cardinals asinine statement and broad brush his OPINION onto the backs of the entire Clergy.
Now that they’ve all but won the fight over same-sex “marriage,” will the legalization of pedophilia be the next great liberal cause?
First it was a sin, which man of his own free will chooses to commit or to resist. Then it becomes an illness or disorder in which the perpetrator is himself a victim. Then it becomes a lifestyle which must be tolerated and respected by all others. We’re halfway there.

So if someone else's response to childhood abuse is to become a serial killer of those who remind him of the abuser, is that murderous conduct not a crime? Does the same logic apply?

Tom Flanagan, a libertarian and former advisor to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was recently caught here saying that viewing child pornography should not be a crime. For two years, Flanagan had been a member of the Man Boy Love Association.
As you stated, the issue in both the Napier and Flanagan incidents is homosexuality, not paedophilia.
The media frames cases like this, which they set up, as paedophilia, since gay rights is one of their pet projects on the path to international socialism.
