Inside a small Steubenville, Ohio, courtroom filled with sobbing and exhausting emotion, Judge Thomas Lipps found Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond guilty Sunday of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl. Lipps sentenced both defendants to a minimum of one year in a youth correctional institute with the determination for a longer sentence coming from child-service experts.

Mays received an additional year for transmission of nude photos, to be served after his rape sentence is completed. Mays and Richmond also will have to register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

"It provides a great incentive to do well," said Lipps, who could have ordered Mays and Richmond to remain behind bars until they turned 21.

> This sort of thing was not a crime when I was that age. It was known as “Friday Night”. I guess the 34 year-old
> Portugese neighbor who took me into her bed when I was 16 in 1968 would still be in prison under today’s standards. Sheesh.

You’re making that up, right, because you watched “The Graduate” on TCM recently?

They were tried as juveniles. When I prosecuted in VA, it was pretty standard for something of this nature for a judge to give an initial sentence of around a year with review after a mental, etc evaluation. The Judge is likely bound by statute and can only do so much. Again, a rather typical sentence given all the facts.

However, they may indeed get the maximum (to 21 years) when it’s back for review.

Also, the statute likely prohibited them from being tried as adults.

So, oddly, the judge probably maxed them with what he could do.

Well, on FR we have pedophile enablers, why not rapist enablers? It’s not like this is a site dedicated to traditional morality or anything.

Wait...not going to touch whatever it is you did with a neighbor, but if you're saying that your teenaged Friday nights consisted of raping incoherent, drunken girls--and you're okay with that--than one of us is on the wrong forum.

I would like to add my thanks for your response. It is nice to know that there are men who understand the difference between consesual sex and sex with an intoxicated or drugged female.

Might I add that the people who watched this, recorded this and did not help this woman will, IMO, be living in hell on earth until their dying days. Only a pyschopath would not realize the horrific event they witnassed. I am not “the” judge, but I believe HE will judge all of these dispicable people in the most harshest ways.

And if you are not a believer, I am guessing you may well at least believe in karma. And karma, SHE does bite back? Hard.

Stop and think about what you are really saying. Seriously think about the behavior to are trying to describe as just another "Friday night". I'm cool with "boys will be boys", but this behavior was way over the line, big time.

Cody Saltsman: Ex-boyfriend of the victim, Cody sent text messages to many people reading, “nobody breaks up with Cody Saltsman, Ill ruin that bitch” one month before the rape. A few weeks later, his best friend, Trent Mays, convinced the victim that Trent was interested in her and that she should go to the party where she was eventually victimized. Saltsman tweeted the following:

“I have no sympathy for whores.”

Meanwhile, yesterday I saw a trailer for a new show on VH1 that was nothing but kids drinking and acting wild and hooking up. Somewhere in Boston I think.

And people wonder why things like this happen.

No one has answered yet where the parents were whose house this drunken party happened.

Put to death. Really? Of course they should be punished, more harshly than they are even. But I do not think some stupid kids who digitally raped a fellow drunk party-goer should have to die for it. In all honesty, she wasn’t physically harmed and would not have known it even happened were it not for loose lips/video. Before anyone goes all self-righteous and yell BUT IT WAS RAPE! Yeah, I was raped when I was a teen. Don’t need to tell me anything about it thank you.

Would I get reprimanded if I called someone defending gang rape of a passed out girl a douche bag and strongly suggest that they be booted off this site?

Let it pass. Elk has said and done far more stupider things in the past. He’s like FR’s own village idiot.

Sounds dangerously close to the same mentality as Muslim “honor killings”.

The mentality that leads to crimes is actually very compatible with the mentality of Islam. It’s no wonder that one of the primary recruiting grounds for Islam is prisons, and why Black Muslim converts are increasing in numbers.

This does sound premeditated. Someone here said it looked like the girl might have been drugged. I wonder if they did toxicology tests on her. Probably wouldn’t find anything since she didn’t even know it had happened until later. Any drugs probably would have been out of her system.

But yes, it seems like the premeditated aspect of this should be investigated and dealt with.

What kind of arrogant SOB says “Nobody breaks up with (me)”? This kid sounds like he thinks he’s God.

The Judge also said no contact with the girl they rape until they are 21 years of age. Aint that cute.

How weird that the judge made that stipulation. I'm betting that the victim will not want to see most of these people ever again, and she will turn around and walk away the second she lays eyes on them.

Pretty much all men are hard wired to protect women, so I am by no means exceptional. What is exceptional (in our Christian culture) is a group of young man thinking that gang rape is OK and cool, that is the thankfully rare exception.

We agree in part. Good night, friend. God bless you.

Ah, don’t worry too much. Ma’lik. You’ll be earning millions on some NFL or NBA team in a few years.....after you become ‘reborn’, profess a love for the Lord and say that you are completely rehabilitated.....a la Ray Lewis.

The society-at-large is post-Christian and bordering on post-modern. I think there was a book called “Slouching Toward Sodom”; I think the descent has been rapidly accelerating in the past few years. Sometimes I feel like I don’t even recognize this country any more. And not just the politics, but the everyday people. The anti-Christian worldviews that are being pushed in academia, media, entertainment, and politics - and swallowed whole by liberal “churches” - are destroying the basic foundation of decency. It can’t safely be presumed that kids or families have any of those foundations any more, just like it can’t safely be presumed that the country has the same foundational “self-evident” truths as were expressed in the Declaration of Independence.

I believe the second(?)party was in the basement of a home with the parents asleep. The mother called police to report she thought one of the episodes might have happened there.
