Wanted: People willing to die on Mars
CBC ^ | 3/16/13

Mars One co-founder tells CBC about its proposed one-way trip to the Red Planet

Mars One hopes to have people living on the planet — for the rest of their lives — by 2023.(Mars One/YouTube)

The man behind the private space project dubbed Mars One is looking for people to travel to Mars, but he's not offering a return ticket.

"The technology to get humans to Mars and keep them alive there exists," Bas Lansdorp told Day 6 host Brent Bambury in an interview that aired this week on CBC Radio.

"The technology to bring humans from Mars back to Earth simply does not exist yet."

Lansdorp said he's looking for people who are utterly dependable, good in groups and "at their best when things are at their worst."

The never-to-return explorers will require eight years of training, and the search starts this year.

The flight is scheduled to leave in Sept. 2022.

I’ve never been to Mars but I imagine it’s quite lovely.

MARS NEEDS WOMEN
Music and Lyrics by Tonio K.

well we argue all day
then we argue all night
we stand up sit down fight fight fight
i don't know about you
i'm just talkin' for me
but i don't see no future in this thing

i hear mars needs women
maybe you should apply
don't worry 'bout me baby
have a good time
i hear mars needs women
i don't know if it's true
but that's all right for you

you don't care about true
you don't care about false
you just want everyone to agree with you that's all
you can't live in the city
you can't live on the farm
you can't live nowhere on this planet with that kind of charm

i hear mars needs women
maybe you should apply
don't worry 'bout me baby
have a good time
i hear mars needs women
i don't know if it's true
but that's all right for you

yeah we argue all day
then we argue all night
we stand up sit down fight fight fight
so i'll take the attic (prov. 25:24)
or the wilderness (prov. 21:19)
you take the next flight out
they're waiting for you up there

i hear mars needs women
maybe you should apply
don't worry 'bout me baby
have a good time
i hear mars needs women
i don't know if it's true
but that's all right for you

Eight years of training before they send me off to Mars to spend the rest of my life eating MREs and drinking recycled urine?

In 8 years, Obamacare will result in Soylent Green.

Can’t we just send all the whacko liberals? And how about muzzies....they should go to. In fact, there are a lot of people we’d be better off without.
No good...

Send all the whacko liberals? "Lansdorp said he's looking for people who are utterly dependable..."

How about muzzies? "Lansdorp said he's looking for people [who are] good in groups and "at their best when things are at their worst."

I think that eliminates both. The former because liberals are utterly UNdependable; the latter because muzzies, when things are at their worst, will just say "It's Allah's will", do nothing about the situation, and when it eventually goes beyond repair, will then resort to cutting off heads.

Sure, I’ll only be near 50. I’ll go in a heart beat. But I want some input into how I’ll live and what I’ll do when I get there

Oh, sorry. You'll be rooming with five guys who shower once every couple months... three Russians and two muslims from Kyrgyzstan. Social engineering experiment. ;-)

Nah, all that bright red will drive you crazy. Probably all those red neon signs at all the Kenny Rogers Chicken franchises.

Hard labor. That's my guess. They're not going to pay people to lay around. You're going to be outside in the cosmic rays, doing construction work, which I'm sure is the reason they wouldn't have me. How hard can you work when you're 84? Not very. They'd love you at 50, though. But I think that's a little too young. Life expectancy isn't going to be that great, a few years, what with constant radiation exposure, work hazards and rudimentary medical care. Well, that's just my guess, but I wouldn't go at 50.

Kind of like an extreme version of the French Foreign Legion. Except in this version you get Martian citizenship.

I don’t mind being a pioneer as long as I’m being a pioneer and not someone elses scientific sociology experiment.

Around Christmas I saw some cable program (History channel? Discover?) about doomsday escape plans with the notion of building some giant orbiting city with something like 1000-2000 people. And of course the sociologists were saying that all segments of society should be included among those "saved", including the poor among us. So much for Darwinian theory of the survival of the fittest. Didn't learn basic hunter, gathering, mechanical, survival skills on Earth. Sure, pass on to the next grade.

When I finally get my flying car, that'll be my first roadtrip. Even if I have to get out and push.

Looks like it's an awfully long way to go just to live in a desert trailer park.

An excellent post. I did not read the article, but I’m guessing these explorers would be sent supplies, etc. for the duration? It would seem pretty pointless to send them up with enough supplies and air for 72 hours and a “so what is it like up there?

Plant a flag, establish an office, then abandon them as Obama did in Libya.

How does this really differ from the earliest settler in the “New World?” They took a huge risk and most never returned to their European home land.

And some made the long journey to the “New World” and not only did they never return to their European home land, some disappeared completely, never to be found or heard from again.

I absolutely would go at the drop of a hat. There will be no shortage of applicants. I can't remember where I read it, but I recall seeing an advertisement placed in the London Times in the (I think) late 1800s. The verbiage went something like this...

Wanted. Explorers and men of courage to brave hostile conditions in attempt to reach North (south?) Pole in scientific endeavour. The expedition will take approximately 6 months and participants can expect grueling conditions, with slight possibility of some renown upon completion of our journey. Survival hopeful, but not guaranteed.

They got more applicants than they could handle in short order. Many were prepared to assist in equipping the expedition as well.

If someone has 30% or better odds of being able to put folk on Mars, I don't think they'll lack for volunteers. 8 years of prep work, should be enough to train someone for almost any specialty. I know that if someone were to put me in a rocket and tell me that there was a 30% chance I'd live on Mars, but a 70% chance I'd die in route by any of a number of methods. I'd not hesitate to sign up.

Like that old "Star Trek" joke - have no idea whether it's true or false. Supposedly some Saudi prince asked Gene Roddenberry why there were no Muslims in "Star Trek". His response: "Because this takes place in the future."

Heinlein wrote that if you could not pay for the air you breath or you proved to be a waste of air that others could breath, you got spaced out of the closest airlock. People were generally industrious and polite on Mars.
