Maybe. But we've also seen some evidence that the zombies can perform basic functions, like opening doors. In the pilot or maybe second episode--I can't remember which--Morgan's zombie wife tries to open the door to their house, which was locked. In the episode when Andrea was attacked in the RV, the door was shut and the zombie got in.
I do agree, though, that the characters make some fairly inexplicable decisions. For one, I don't understand why Rick keeps refusing to allow other people into the prison when he knows he is going to war with the Governor. I recognize that there are trust issues, but why wouldn't you pick up backpack guy? Wouldn't an able-bodied male be worth his weight in gold, especially since there are only 3 (Rick, Glen, and Daryl) in their group? Why did he kick out Tyrese and his crew? Dumb.

Still can’t buy it. Zombies are not stealthy. I think you would hear one trying to work the knob. They also tend to shuffle their feet when they walk, and when they see the living they moan. How can you miss that in a quiet house especially when on high alert?
As for not letting in new people I think its not just about trust. I think Rick doesnt want to be responsible for more people who might get killed. They are quite a formidable group. A delusional leader, his tween son, 2 females who barely know how to shoot, the wannabe badazz sexpot, her somewhat capable lover, a crippled old guy, and a truly capable fighter. The addition of sword girl and the 1 armed badazz does improve things, but they might just kill each other.
