This was a show they did a few years ago. It shows the steps taken in producing .22LR ammunition at ATK's CCI facility in Lewiston, ID. There are a few steps they don't show, if you are really interested, I highly recommend reading this book: http://tinyurl.com/4z6yxn4
Part 2 is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdNkfTS0lOQ
Was around back then and remember it. More recently the rumor of a rice shortage a few years back caused similar problems.
I upped my reloading since the first of the year.
Set myself up to cast 30 cal. bullets. Push comes to shove the mold I bought can be used in my 30/30, in 308 and in 30-06.
I think it runs about $.12 - .15 to reload 30/30 if you have the brass. That is some pretty inexpensive plinkng.
Have been able to buy primers, powder and bullets most of the time.
Trying to see that I have ammo for all our guns. Getting pretty close to that.
Do I expect to have to use it? At this point no. But with the insanity in the financial markets a global collapse is possible. If that happens, all bets are off. The bad stuff that just happened in Cyprus is just the tip of this mess.
A lot of those folks went through the rationing of WW2 and were easily re-sensitized. My parents were among them. Mom would always have safety stock stored ahead just in case something disrupted her ability to replenish the staples; Usually a lake effect snow storm that could immobilize you for a week to 10 days.
I think that somebody could make a fortune right now with what could be called a “Ronco Ammo Maker” set. That is, as easy as ammo loading and reloading is, many people are turned off when they see even simple machine tools. Yet put them inside a white plastic case, and no problem.
In other words, doing exactly the same things, but with something that looks like a kitchen appliance instead of machine shop tools.
Using that little bit of psychology, and people would be willing to spend many times what they would be willing to spend on loading and reloading tools and supplies.
Two years ago I was haunting the local Cabela’s looking for .380 which had all but disappeared. With no real hope, I looked on the shelf and there were three, 50 round boxes of .380 which I grabbed lost without thinking. As I turned to leave there was a guy who missed the chance and looked at my left hand.
I don’t think I’m all that generous but 100 rounds for a pocket pistol is about as good as 150. I offered him a box and he took it like it was water and he had just wandered in from the Sahara. This’ll pass.
Johnny Carson once caused a nearly month-long toilet paper shortage simple by saying that it was in short supply (as a joke).
Even when the shelves were replenished, people would buy it all up again perpetuating the perception that it was in short supply
