Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that 10 states will receive funding to turn around their persistently lowest-achieving schools through the Department's School Improvement Grant (SIG) program. Four of the states will receive awards to run a new competition for previously unfunded schools, and six states will receive continuation funds for the third year of implementing a SIG model. The states receiving new awards are: Indiana—$9.2 million; Nebraska—$2.6 million; Colorado—$5.2 million; and Louisiana—$9.6 million. The states receiving continuation awards are: Alaska—$1.5 million; Iowa—$3.0 million; North Dakota—$1.2 million; Oklahoma—$5.5 million; Texas—$49.7 million; and Wyoming—$1.1 million.
"When schools fail, our children and our neighborhoods suffer," Duncan said. "Turning around our lowest-performing schools is hard work but it's our responsibility. We owe it to our children, their families and the broader community. These School Improvement Grants are helping some of the lowest-achieving schools provide a better education for students who need it the most."
School Improvement Grants are awarded to State Educational Agencies (SEAs) that then make competitive subgrants to those local educational agencies (LEAs) that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use them to provide the resources required to substantially raise student achievement in their lowest-performing schools.
Under the Obama administration, the SIG program has invested up to $6 million per school over three years at more than 1,300 of the country's lowest-performing schools. Early findings show positive momentum and progress in many SIG schools, and some of the greatest gains have been in small towns and rural communities.

Every one seems to want to talk about failing schools. Nobody seems to want to talk about the failing (not)families behind the failing schools.
Strangely, they mostly appear to be Red states.

I know a lot of freepers out there think that’s a lot of money but when broken down it would fund 1 (one) high school in Wyoming. The operating budget of the average HS in the USA is $1.1 million a year. Another example, $1.1 million wouldn’t cover the operational costs (paper, computers, paper clips, etc.) for 3 mos. in any of the local school systems in the state of Maryland. It sounds like a lot in total but in reality it isn’t a &^*% in a pot in actual expenditures.
If 0bama gives them money, they are expected to do as the King says.
States can't print money,they are supposed live within a budget,unlike the Federal Government.

apples and oranges. Federal gov’t provides money in the form of grants that each school must apply for through their local district, then to their state department of education, then to the fed. All local operating expenses, including 75% of all school operating budgets, teacher salaries, are the responsibility of the local county government. The federal money is probably going to free and reduced lunches in impoverished neighborhoods and will have nothing to do with “improving” “low achieving” schools.”Low achieving” has a different definition by state since there is no national test that determines “success”.
Eliminate The Department of Education,eliminate a few more wasteful Federal Government Departments, and as my Dad use to say,"We'll be shitin' in cotton".
The curricula is the rotten thing......if there was Classical curricula with no Federal controls, even if the families were dissolving, the schools would be teaching Virtue (excellence) and morality. Kids used to get it from the surrounding culture even in Ghettos—prior to the Marxist takeover in the 30’s to kill Christianity.
There were many orphans in early 1900’s who likely had moral neighbors and ended up having really good, productive lives in the end——because of outside influences. They learned Good and Evil—the Biblical/USA definition.
Now, broken families have no way to save their children-—none...the schools are teaching rotten ideology-—and making kids “feel” good about Vice and evil-—and the movies and TV reinforce evil, dysfunctional behavior-—not even “Leave it to Beaver” type of shows.... where good behavior can be modeled. They have role models who are dysfunctional and evil now.
The curricula is dripping with operant conditioning-—for “group think” and associations—to create non-thinking Marxists who can’t control any urge and “feel good” about doing evil things to others and their own bodies. They are made to feel “pleasure” by doing evil.....through BF Skinner laced curricula.

Notice many of the states receiving funding for failing programs have high Indian populations. Have you ever been to an Indian Reservation and seen the social problems related to alcoholism. Quite common to have FAS rates above 85%.
Abolish the Department of Education.
