Of the many reasons Dr. Ben Carson should run for Senate in Michigan

His wisdom and qualifications are at the top of the list.

The fact that his nomination will reveal the vile underbelly of the Democratic Party race-card machine is an added bonus.

From Nolan Finley in The Detroit News, Detroit native Carson could break barriers in Senate race (emphasis added):

I have no idea if Dr. Carson wants to do this, but if he does, I can't think of many senate races that would make democrat heads explode more.

The second time mentioned today. A little fun for the ping list.

He’s not ideal but the Detroit schools have idolized him for years and he could actually win there.

More important he could be invaluable as an inspiration to turn things around in the families.

Every once in a while he says something a bit suspicious, but I can't think of a conservative who hasn't.

He would be far above Levin or Stabenow in sanity and actual achievement, plus he does have some obvious conservative leanings. Most of the fun would be watching the libs scream bloody murder about the new Uncle Tom in town while he smiles and makes them look like the fools they are.

Maybe. I think your inference may be that he would pull in a substantial percentage of black voters? I’ll have to see that happen before I believe it. As soon as the Dem’s get a whiff that Carson may run, they will start demonizing him, calling him a Tom, etc. Black organizers will see to it that the black community rejects him - in mass.

I wish them lots of luck in Detroit. They already idolize him.

How long since he lived in Michigan? That is a major issue.

Give me a break. Black people in Detroit are not going to vote for a Republican over a Democrat - no matter who the Republican is. This is the same population that elected Kwame Kilpatrick - twice! Black organizers, black radio, unions, etc, will savage Carson, but even more important is the simple fact that black people support bigger, more expansive government. They may be ignorant, but they know which party supports the most freebies. In Detroit, the best we can hope for is maybe depressed black turnout.

I'm all for Carson running, but let's not kid ourselves - the vast majority of black people in Detroit are still going to vote overwhelmingly for whoever the Democrat candidate is. Carson may very well be able to win Michigan for us, but he will have to overcome the vote totals in Detroit to do it.

This guy believes in situational application of the 2nd Amendment. Why would conservatives support someone can’t even understand our basic rights.

No way.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing - look what the Democrats did to Herman Cain, for example - but there are two additional factors to consider.

First, Democrats usually count on having a lock on the black vote. Forcing the Democrats to spend time, effort and money to keep black voters in their normal Democratic column means taking the battle to their home turf. If they're forced to fight for votes they normally take for granted, that means they're not able to spend that time, energy and money competing for the normal swing voters.

Second, turnout in Detroit is critical in Michigan's statewide elections. When I lived in Michigan, the standard joke was that Dutchmen in Grand Rapids needed to pray for rain in Detroit on election day. It's a joke, but there's truth behind it. Even if black Detroiters can't be persuaded to vote Republican, if they're not highly motivated to turn out for the Democratic candidate, it can result in a Republican victory statewide.

Of course the Democrats will try to blast any black Republican as an “Uncle Tom.” The key question, and it's one to which I don't know the answer, is what kind of support he has in the “school improvement” community and in black churches. Those two segments of the black community can, with the right candidate, be split off from the Democratic leadership. They may not vote for the Republican candidate, but a decision by key black pastors to say, in essence, “We hope the Democrat wins, but we won't tolerate white Democrats demonizing this black candidate who has a long history of doing good things and who made a strange choice to be a Republican,” can keep the Republican candidate from being undercut in his own community.

He's not the perfect candidate by any means, and I'm not happy about what I read on his Second Amendment views, but he's worth a shot and any Republican from Michigan will be better than what the state has now in the US Senate. Let's not forget that there was a day when everybody thought all Southerners and all Roman Catholics would always and for all time vote for the Democratic Party, which Republicans demonized as being the party of "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion."

I decided to delete a paragraph here because it sounded too much like "horn tooting." Let's just say I know what I'm talking about and have practical experience in living and working in inner-city communities. Writing off the black vote is a mistake when we have a credible black candidate. This has real potential.

It is a liberal myth that certain ethnic groups will always vote Democrat, and I'm not a fan of myths.

I think the democrats would run into serious trouble if they tried to demonize Ben Carson. Detroit is a city where his photo is on the wall in many classrooms. He’s a local hero.

There was a woman on Rush today who talked about Dr. Ben doing brain surgery on her 12 yr old daughter and what an impressive guy he was.

I agree with a lot of your comments here. I think it's probably great if Carson runs, I just don't think there is any chance the black community in Detroit will vote for him. He might win over enough people in the suburbs to really make a difference, though I am skeptical of a novice candidate starting off with a Senate run. Politics is a skill and political novices usually have to start at the local level to get the hang of it.

It is a liberal myth that certain ethnic groups will always vote Democrat, and I'm not a fan of myths.

They won't always, but it could be many decades or longer before anything changes. Voting tends to be generational and I hate to say it but we are losing these minority communities in ever great numbers. I see no progress at this point to be optimistic about. We are, for example, now losing Asians at a rate higher than even Hispanics. Not much more than a decade ago we used to win this group. Cubans voted 48% for Obama in 2012 and we will very possibly have lost this group by 2016. We once won them overwhelmingly. Unfortunately, we were probably only ever winning both groups due to Republican anti-communism positions. With that threat absent, they too vote like every other minority - for more free stuff.

Yes, we have to try. Eventually things will change, but it may not be in our lifetimes. It is just false to believe that people can be counted on to do the right thing. The current generation of people in Detroit will vote Democrat and support Democrat positions even with their city caving in around them. Voting Democrat is an article of faith for these people (and many other minorities), they simply do not associate economic failure with their voting habits. And in today's America, there is no longer a silent majority of traditional, conservative people to rise up if the left ever pushes too far. Maybe a couple decades ago that was true, but clearly no longer. Things are pretty dire, and something like another amnesty would probably be the death knell of whatever is left.

Here’s the reason that we need 1000 or more Ben Carsons to run.

If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for being in the country illegally ...you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If you have to get your parents’ permission to go on a field trip or take an aspirin in school, but not to get an abortion ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If the only school curriculum allowed to explain how we got here is evolution, but the government stops a $15 million construction project to keep a rare spider from evolving to extinction ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If you have to show identification to board an airplane, cash a check, buy liquor or check out a library book, but not to vote who runs the government ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If the government wants to ban stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines with more than ten rounds, but gives 20 F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If, in the largest city, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not a 24-ounce soda because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If an 80-year-old woman can be stripped searched by the TSA but a woman in a hijab is only subject to having her neck and head searched ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If your government believes that the best way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt is to spend trillions more ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If a seven year old boy can be thrown out of school for saying his teacher “cute,” but hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class in grade school is perfectly acceptable ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If children are forcibly removed from parents who discipline them with spankings while children of addicts are left in filth and drug infested “homes”... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government intrusion, while not working is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized housing and free cell phones ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If the government’s plan for getting people back to work is to incentivize NOT working with 99 weeks of unemployment checks and no requirement to prove they applied but can’t find work ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

If being stripped of the ability to defend yourself makes you more “safe” according to the government ... you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.
