Fury Grows Over Colorado's New Gun Laws

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed three pieces of gun control legislation into law on Wednesday. The signings were met with anger, legal challenges and even a petition to recall Hickenlooper. Here are the details.

The three bills that have now become law require payments for background checks, universal background checks and the prohibition of large-capacity magazines.

In a statement issued upon the signing of HB 13-1224, which prohibits large-capacity ammunition magazines, Hickenlooper wrote, "we acknowledge that some have expressed concerns about the vagueness of the law's definition of "large-capacity magazine." By its terms, the law does make illegal any magazine manufactured or purchased after July 1, 2013, that is capable of accepting, or is designed to be readily converted to accept more than 15 rounds of ammunition."

Hickenlooper stated that his office is directing the Colorado Department of Public Safety to consult with the Office of the Attorney General to draft and issue technical guidance on how law enforcement agencies should interpret and enforce the law. He said that guidance is expected to be done by the law's July 1 effective date.

Already ... with the lead plaintiffs being sheriffs from around Colorado who state that the law violates the Second Amendment

Earlier this week, the Denver Post reported that Weld County Sheriff John Cooke said he wouldn't enforce the new gun-control measures. His announcements follow criticism from other sheriffs, including Terry Maketa of El Paso County and Justin Smith of Larimer County.

The posting from Magpul went on to encourage Colorado residents to "take the state back through recalls, ballot initiatives, and the 2014 election to undo these wrongs against responsible citizens."

-snip-

An additional recall effort is underway for the Democratic Colorado Senate President, John Morse of Senate District 11, which covers El Paso County.

One Sheriff said he would assume that all were made before the ban.

He might as well - I don't think anyone has been able to buy one since!

Many don't seem to realize that most of California is rural, full of hunters and outdoorsmen. Unfortuately, it is the big cities along the coast full of Liberal out of state transplants and illegal immigrants that ruin this state.

Perhaps it is living in a large city that creates liberals, rather than being contaminated from outside.

It does seem that most of the liberal bastions (I love that word today!) are relatively large cities, and seem to metastisize "in-place" so to speak...

They need to get rid of those stinking kalifornians. Anybody from kalifornistan in the last 25 years should be deported. Oregon and Washington State need to do likewise, as does Austin and Tulsa.

It's these kinds of off-the-wall statements (unless this is your sense of humor) that make no sense at all. How, sir, does one go about "deporting" American citizens from a state? You do know that one can live in the state of his or her choice, don't you?

It's nonsense like that I would expect to find on DU but unfortunately, one sees it on FR, much too often.

but we can talk to them and we can convince them of their mistakes.

I would not have thought there is anyone on earth who is this stupid.
Save maybe Joe Biden.

“So everyone is going to buy all the high capacity magazines they can find.”

I have found and bought two since January. I'm in Texas but if the federal government passes a law making high capacity magazines illegal, none would be in this country to buy and Texas couldn’t do anything about that.

Our US Senate starts debating their gun bills next week. Their bills are like Colorado's - the buyer pays for a universal background check (which puts them on a list of what they bought and where they live), and one limits the number of rounds in a magazine.

We are not free in this country any more.

We elected Hickenlooper to GET RID OF GUNS in our state. The COWBOY days are over. It's time to move into the future, into the 21st Century. We are the state that will SET THE EXAMPLE and make sure that there are no more guns ANYWHERE. Sure, a bunch of RIGHT WING EXTREMISTS will say that bad people will have guns, but we can talk to them and we can convince them of their mistakes. We have NO DOUBT that they will come around and also turn in their guns, when they see what a bright future for Colorado this will mean. Susan,

Obviously, we are just ignorant. Susan and her ilk will cure that. Surely people like Susan can educate those of us who cling to guns and religion.

Seriously, I have neighbors that think like Susan. They are also the most closed minded people I have ever encountered, which is to say they are liberals (aka "socialists"). This will not end well.

Dear Susan,

For your safety the state will be relocating you tomorrow.
Please report to.the train station with your family and papers. We will ship your belongings in a few days. After a short train ride, a warm shower and some bread and marmalade you will be placed in housing.

Simpleton!

I moved to the Tulsa area from OKC in 2007. Reading the Tulsa World editorial pages and the online response forums told me I wasn’t in Oz anymore. The political spectrum definitely shifts leftward here. I guess the best indicator was the previous mayor felt it was OK to join Bloomin’Idiot’s anti-gun group and now she’s decided she’s still politically viable so she’s planning on running again.

This reliably libertarian Californian, of Okie and Colorado early 20th century extracts, fled the Golden State for Tennessee. Not ALL Californians are kooks.

Yer swingin' a mighty broad brush, there, pard.

Welcome to Shasta County, California's gun-buying capital

Shasta County performs background checks -- 57.15 per 1,000 residents a year from 2007 through 2011 -- at a higher rate than 20 states, including Texas.

Like liberal states everywhere, our cities have out-sized influence on state politics.

“I live in Texas also and will ignore their intrusions into my rights.”

If the federal government outlawed the selling of multiple round magazines, they wouldn't be sold in this country so you couldn't get one even if you lived in Texas - there wouldn't be any sold any more. Maybe, or not, you could find one a private person had and purchase that but that would be the only way to get one.

As laws have already been passed, if you look on websites of companies that sell these multiple round magazines, you will see they list the states and cities where they can't sell you a magazine, so you can't order one if you live in those restricted states/cities.

Its time for civil disobedience.

Damn straight it is.

Letters, emails, phone calls, petitions, editorials, talk radio -- none of it has done a damn thing to get the attention of Congress.

"Right of the people to seek redress"? Don't make me laugh.

The Commies own the media. The Commies own the education system. The Commies own entertainment. The Commies own the courts. The Commies own most local, state, and federal bureaucracies. In too many places, the Commies own the ballot box.

Folks, there's only one last step we can make before we have to open up that final box, and it's Civil Disobedience.

Here's a handbook on the subject that ExTexasRedhead shared with me:

The StreetSmarts Manual: Activism At Every Level . . . From The State To The Street

The big cities are the problem everywhere and always have been.

Yep, I live in Notchicago, Illinois. One city ruins the entire state.
