"It was a ruined idea from the very beginning. It only took one to three generations of socialist-entitlement and compulsory K-12 schooling to give the nation Franklin D. Roosevelt with his many socialist and compulsory programs."

Then you have a VERY short-sighted view/knowledge of history. "Public Schools" worked just fine as long as funding and control were at the LOCAL level.

Many of them were as good or better than the best private schools working with less funding and a "lesser" class of students.

The problems started when the influx of money to the schools (and thus control) moved from the local community to the state and then later to the federal level.

The idea that public schools of any sort are automatically "bad" is ludicrous.

I appreciate your prayer for this cause but I have to ask you, do Catholics pray through Mary to the Father?

Maybe so, but Planned Parenthood has the full backing of the Republican Establishment.

We also pray through the members of our parish. The poet Tennyson once described her as “our tainted nature’s solitary boast.” Meaning, that she alone of every human being ever accepted God’s grace in its entirety.

“The idea that public schools of any sort are automatically “bad” is ludicrous.”

Actually, the system began to rot from within when atheist/socialist John Dewey became the dominant influence in American education. The reading methods were sabotaged, resulting in ever-increasing illiteracy until the rate now hovers around 40% to 50% and higher in some school districts. Every child who can’t read becomes a low-information voter.

“...and accusing him of things like too much repetition in his mathematics classes, where he was told he could not teach the MULTIPLICATION TABLES to math deficient students and could not review FACTORING.”

(I’ll leave the Planned Parenthood end of this story to others, and I’ll comment on the above)

So, here we are. A MATH TEACHER is losing his job, in part, because he was attempting to teach multiplication and factoring to kids who OBVIOUSLY hadn’t learned it in the wonderful and progressive Portland School District.

Yes, you parents of public school kids, feel free to SNICKER, smug that it cannot happen in your WONDERFUL public school because you see the teacher in church once in a while, but it’s NO DIFFERENT...except that they hide it better.

People of Texas are just learning this with CSCOPE (look it up), which was a TOTAL end-around of our (otherwise very good) school accountability system. 75% of our schools now use it, but no one really knows what’s in it, because parents simply don’t have access to the materials. And with 75% of our public schools using it, that means that a lot of WONDERFUL PUBLIC SCHOOLS are on that list.

So go snicker away, while your children get their lives wrecked, especially if they’re white, and ESPECIALLY if they’re male.

The public schools adopted the Prussian model after the civil war, which ipso facto, meant schools operated by the state. But public education, as originally under stood embraces the private schools as well, just as public heslth embraces all private medical facilities. Yes, the schools have socialized because the private schools are largely unable to compete financially.

Agreed.

And the Marxist concept of government-run, tax-funded schools also has the full backing of the Republican Establishment.

Yes, this is true. But his influence didn't begin to assert itself until the early 20th Century. Locally funded and controlled schools began with the first colonial settlements, so there is a lengthy period of time in which said public schools work just fine. Many of them were initiated by religious groups, true....but they were still locally funded and controlled.

The real death blow was "desegregation", in which courts basically took over many schools or placed them under (ultimate) federal control.

Locally controlled socialist-entitlement and single-payer schooling is merely locally controlled collectivism.

It only took one to three generations of locally controlled collectivist schooling to give the nation voters who were comfortable with Franklin D. Roosevelt and his compulsory-use, socialist-entitlement, and single-payer programs.

Children who attend collectivist and compulsory ( that means police enforcement) risk learning to be comfortable with government compulsion and socialism.

At first Obamacare won't be that bad. It will take a few generations to fully extinguish the moral and ethical values now found in the workers in today's health system. ( schools). Then when the true horror of socialist medicine ( schooling) is fully felt we will see the same arguments now used to urge reform of the government schools. For example:

Socialist medicine ( socialist-entitlement schooling) worked just find as long as the funding and control of the death panels was on the LOCAL level.

Many socialist hospitals( socialist-entitlement K-12 schools) were better than the best private hospitals ( schools).

The problem with socialist medicine ( socialist K-12 schooling) started with the influx of money to the hospitals ( collectivist school districts) and away from local control.

Socialist medicine ( socialist-schooling)was just fine until the unions moved in.

etc...etc....etc.

Fundamentally, socialism doesn't work. Socialist-entitlement and single-payer K-12 schooling gave the nation socialist presidents and was doomed to fail.

I find posts like yours very discouraging. Geeze! When even conservatives fail to see that the underlying problem with government K-12 schooling is that it is socialist-entitlement and single-payer schooling,...well...as a nation we are in BIG trouble.

"The public schools adopted the Prussian model after the civil war, which ipso facto, meant schools operated by the state.

Perhaps true in some areas, but where I grew up (south Louisiana), there was still plenty of local control in spite of the intrusion of the state government.

"Yes, the schools have socialized because the private schools are largely unable to compete financially.

That may at one time have been true, but given the exponentially increasing cost of public education is certainly no longer so. The USA spends more for (and gets less out of) "public education" than any other country.

**Modern** K-12 schooling has its beginnings in the mid-1800s when states enacted its compulsory attendance laws and laws for compulsory and single-payer funding.

We could save oceans of money by closing the public schools and letting parents utilize the private sector and/or home school their children. Public schools cost a minimum of $10,000 per student whereas private schools cost on average $7,000 per student.

Think of the possibilities: Individual teachers (formerly employed by the public schools) could rent a single classroom from the now-bankrupt public school system and gather in as many voucher/supported students as they think they can teach. Those teachers who teach their subject well would make far more money than they are receiving now from the public/socialist system.

Remember that in the time of Adam Smith parents paid the professor directly.

1) The NEA is what it is because **teachers** ( the majority of them) make it that way. Please remember that parents, school board members, and representatives have NO control over the NEA. ONLY ONLY ONLY **TEACHERS** make the NEA what it is.

These are the teachers who are greatly influencing the next generation of voters and will have great impact on the moral fiber of our nation in the near future.

2) Locally controlled collectivism is still COLLECTIVISM! Fundamentally, government schooling is ( and **always** has been) a socialist-entitlement, single-payer, compulsory-use, compulsory-funded, and price-fixed monopoly cartel! At first it offered the students a lukewarm and generic Protestant worldview. Today's collectivist K-12 schools are utterly GODLESS!

Teachers could teach in their homes. The zoning and health regulations should not be any more onerous than those now imposed on home-based day care.
