Mystery Surrounds Death of Teens in Bothced [sic] Texas Burglary

Two Oklahoma teenagers are dead after a shootout with a Texas couple whose house they were attempting to rob on Wednesday, March 20. The gunfight between the homeowners and the two teens ended unexpectedly when both of the teens, independently of each other, took their own lives.

A woman was home at her Maypearl, Texas ranch Wednesday afternoon, watching television, when she heard her back door rattling. When she went to see about the noise, she came face to face with an armed man trying to get in.

She called her husband, who was outside on the property, and got her gun. CBS DFW reports that she fired a warning shot at the intruders.

Her husband arrived and met the two men outside of his house. Kenneth Chaffin, 17, and Dillon King, 18, both opened fire.

The husband was able to retrieve two rifles from inside house, and return fire. Authorities believe he hit King in the foot. He went down in a field beside the ranch house.

The husband was also hit, though superficially. He did not pursue Chaffin, who retreated to a stolen pickup truck the pair had parked in a field near the house.

Law enforcement, responding to the wife’s 911 call from within the house, found the King dead not far from the house. Though King had been shot by the homeowner, the nature of his injuries suggest that he took his own life.

Deputies used dogs to search for Chaffin. “While we were going into the field, we heard another shot,” Lt. James Saulter, of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, told CBS DFW, “which we believe was the second suspect taking his own life.”

“This is a perfect example of how, if the homeowner had not been armed,” Brown told reporters, “this incident could have very well had a different, tragic outcome involving our residents.”

When seconds count, the police are minutes away. Little doubt that two suicidal teens would have thought nothing of killing a middle age couple.

“In Texas, we WILL kill you back.”

I recently saw a bumper sticker reading; “Come back to Miami. We weren’t shooting at you.’

They weren’t suicidal, they thought they were invincible.

I think if every home owner had a neon-sign on the front and rear of the house that says everyone in this house is armed, he’s just be skipeed. This whole robbery game is about statistics. If you want to rob folks....you tend to want to survive. The minute you toss in a tough situation....they’d just like to skip that house.

So we need to find some folks who want to start a business enterprise, and just manufacture neon-signs....”Armed and Ready”. Figure forty bucks a year for electricity....but no idiot is going to come around.

However you characterize them, they obviously did not value their own lives highly.

These guys are serious Darwin award candidates. Breaking into any house in Texas is a crapshoot but these rural homeowners ALL have guns

My thinking, too. I don’t have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you. Those moron newspaper people in Westchester County, NY, who “outted” gun owners may have done their neighbors a disservice by implicitly identifying all the easy marks in the County.

Odd that they committed suicide.

The names of the two sound middle class white. High school age. Stole a pickup. Parked it out of sight in a field. Determined to rob this house to the point of engaging in a shootout with husband and wife who were home and well armed.

Why? Get in the stolen truck, get the heck out of there, ditch the truck and escape. Then, the suicide pact. Killed themselves independently of one another once they'd failed to rob this particular house.

Weird. Maybe robbery wasn't what they were after?

There's a lot more going on here than is being told.

Bothced Texas Burglary

Welcome to Bothced, Texas.

There's something ironic about that, but I can't quite figure it out...

When it comes to guns for personal protection, There is no rivalry between OK and TX.

I am not a sports fan.

Protection of life is not a sport.

The citizens of OK nor TX will be disarmed.

Lessons learned:

1)Never fire a "warning shot." If you have to shoot someone, shoot to kill.

2)Homeowner was lucky he wasn't shot retrieving weapons from his home. In today's environment it is wise to have a weapon on you and/or in your vehicle.

According to some accounts the 17 year old Chaffin had a history of running away from home.

He stole medication, a truck and the firearms from his family in OK.

I suspect drugs were involved and that was the motive for the break-in.

It is unclear why the other young man was involved and killed himself.

My neighborhood has about 40 homes on rural lots. About a fourth of the homes have yard signs that say, “We don’t call 911 - Neighborhood Gun Club”.

That’s the mindset of rural Texas.
