Business and Labor Are Said to Near Deal on Immigration By ASHLEY PARKER and STEVEN GREENHOUSE March 29, 2013 WASHINGTON The nations top business and labor groups are nearing agreement on a guest worker program for low-skilled immigrants, a final sticking point that had stalled negotiations late last week on a broad immigration overhaul, and are closing in on a deal that could come as early as Friday, according to officials involved in the talks.
An agreement between the labor and business communities would clear one of the last hurdles for an overall deal on immigration legislation in the Senate, which the bipartisan group hopes to introduce early next month.
We are very close, closer than weve ever been, said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York and a member of a bipartisan group of senators working on comprehensive immigration legislation. We are very optimistic, but there are a few issues remaining.
The United States Chamber of Commerce and the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the nations main federation of labor unions, have been in discussions parallel to those of the Senate group, and have reached a tentative agreement about the size and scope of a temporary guest worker program, which would grant up to 200,000 new visas annually for low-skilled workers.
The labor-business talks came close to breaking down last Friday, on the eve of a two-week Congressional recess, over the issue of what the pay levels should be for low-skilled immigrants, often employed at restaurants or on construction projects, who could be brought in when employers said they faced labor shortages.

“Guest worker” is code for “Illegal Democrat voter.”
What might surprise some folks, though, is that there's a whole other side to this that doesn't get a lot of attention.
With all of the legislative moves at the Federal and state levels to increase the minimum wage, this isn't really about getting cheap labor into the U.S. anymore. It's about getting two things here: (1) willing and able labor, and (2) a whole new cohort of consumers.
Never ever believe a GOP whenever they go after unions....they are working together on something that will screw over America....whether it is Free Trade or Illegal Alien Amnesty
There are plenty of Americans willing to work....most of our landscapers where I work are white, English speaking Americans
And, the new illegals add zero to the economy....as they take away jobs and taxes from Americans. You actually have less consumption.
More illegal aliens are a burden
“There are plenty of Americans willing to work....most of our landscapers where I work are white, English speaking Americans”
Not here in L.A.
These scum - I’m told that in chip design, that there’s still so much unemployment that you have to be willing to just travel cross-country for 3 month assignments where you can find them, like some sort of high-tech migrant worker.
I hate politician scum. Traitors.
We have 10's of millions of low skilled invaders already here and these geniuses want to grant visas to 200,000 more unskilled workers per year?
And Rand Paul applauds them and agrees with them.
That’s because you live in a city that’s already been overrun with illegals.
Enjoy!
Sure I enjoy it. I pay them close to nickels whenever they park my Mercedes SL whenever I eat in Burbank.
and more money to prop up SS
You may be paying nickels to illegals, but your taxes are the highest in the Nation. Enoy your cheap labor and high taxes. Thank you for paying more than your fair share!
Actually the highest taxes are paid in NY but I get what u are saying, gringo.
Exactly how are you communicating with us from the year 1950?
And “a guest worker program for low-skilled immigrants” is a guarantee of permanent high unemployment for Americans.
