Driving With Your Dog? Bill Would Prohibit Pets Behind the Wheel

CHICAGO — Proposed legislation would make it illegal in Illinois for dogs to get behind the wheel of a car. Dogs in the driver's seat — on their owners' laps — is a dangerous but common habit, said state Rep. Dan Burke (D-Chicago), co-sponsor of the bill. "Because I travel, I can't help but observe the number of people with dogs on their laps," he said. "It is a public safety concern. If a driver is distracted, certainly it would be a risk to other motorists on the road." Under the proposed law, getting caught with a pet in the driver's seat would carry a $25 fine, though a motorist couldn't get pulled over unless committing another driving violation. For now, however, it seems lap dogs will have their day. Though it cleared a transportation committee, the legislation faces overwhelming opposition as it heads to the House floor, said bill co-sponsor, Rep. Dan Beiser (D-Alton)...

LOL! Good one but dogs do some things men can’t. :-)

Many years ago I saw this gentleman going down the road in his Model T with a dog at the wheel, it was a large black dog so it was probably a black lab.

He had several different dogs over the years he’d trained and was a legend around Carson City.

"I won’t let my pooch drive...he always gets a ticket for failing to yeild."

Our chuweenie - Mr. Wiggles - lost driving privileges for rolling past a stop sign without stoping and for sassing police officer. The officer was irritated with him. If he breaks the law again, he will have to wear one of those Lindsey Lohan ankle thingies.

Serves the little fella', but daily he looks out the window just to see the cars go by.......

There should be a law so that if a stupid bill doesn’t get passed, whoever introduced it is fined a hefty fine for wasting everybody’s time and taxpayer money. That would cut some of the frivilous crappola.

Sorry for your loss. This guy is not my dog, I just thought it was a cute picture to insert into this tread. The old ‘compare and contrast’ with the guy on the right (Definitly NOT me). I do admit to sometime bringing my two girls for a drive and finding one in the driver’s seat when I come out of a store. I admonish her for this.

I'm totally hopeless, long beyond even capability of admonishment. My 85 lb. Pitador always sits in the front passenger seat beside me with his nose on the center arm rest, pushing against my right elbow. Then the wonderful, deceased Brother was followed by a Great Dane, Canute, who's now a little over two years old and about 110 lb. Canute sits on the back seat, feet on the floor and nose in between the two front seats so he can watch everything that's going on through the windshield.

I live in suburban NJ, near NYC, and yes, the law passed.
We have two dogs and my wife immediately ordered dog seat belts from Amazon. I think we’ve only used them once or twice, to drive down to the Vet’s with the pooch/pooches.
It’s very unlikely that even now, anyone would get a ticket for this on the first offense. It was obviously perceived by LE to have the potential to be an unpopular law from the beginning, so they didn’t even publicize it very much/
there’s a good chance that a large %age of dog owners still don’t even know that it actually became law.
