Open carry law goes into effect July 1 (Mississippi)

Law enforcement agencies around the state are educating their officers on the new open carry weapons law, which is known as House Bill 2. It has been approved by both houses of the Mississippi Legislature and signed by the governor.

The new law allows any Mississippian, who is not otherwise disqualified, to openly carry a gun, with or without a permit. A permit is still required if the weapon is concealed.

The author of the legislation Rep. Andy Gipson of Braxton says it simply makes clear what has been the law of the state since the 1890 constitution was approved.

Madison attorney Andy Taggert, who also is a political commentator for WLBT on Red Blue Review, thinks the new law is good.

"I think the Mississippi constitution already made it legal to strap on a six shooter, and walk down the main street," said Taggert. "What this statute does is make it very clear, effective July one."

Prior to Sandy Hook, there was a business locally that had the No Guns Allowed sign up.

Much to my delight...the signs came down IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING, and have stayed down.

Apparently Mississippi hadn’t heard the 2nd applies to the states as well, due to the 14th amendment being passed. ‘Shall not be infringed’ is constantly violated by most, but not all, of the states; as well as by the federal government.
And lofo citizens just accept it.

Went to a Chinese restaurant in Houston that had a big sign near the door stating that handguns were not allowed inside the premises.

Before turning around I told the owner that he would lose a lot of business if he kept the sign up.

The notice has disappeared.

Surprisingly, most of the signs you see are for large national chain stores that are anti-gun, not statewide or local businesses.

It makes sense, because a mom-and-pop store crave every single customer they can get, so are not going to put up signs telling a large number of them their business isn’t wanted. The exception being if they are hardcore lefties.

I do remember two small businesses, both coffee houses, that “cut off their nose to spite their face”, however. In both cases, the paying customers they wanted, fraternity types and Yuppies, respectively, was not the paying customers they got.

In the case of the former, the owner had been a fraternity guy, and he wanted to cater to others, talk sports and keep the party going. What he got was teen Goths. Lots of them. Finally he had enough, even though it was a going concern, and sold the place.

The latter who wanted upscale Yuppies actually got a goodly number of them, but also got “colorful vagrant” types, who led unusual lives, played instruments, and were utterly fascinating to the Yuppies. But not the owner, who tried to drive them out. However, as they left, the Yuppies left as well, despite his entreaties.

He eventually wised up and invited the oddballs back.

I think these two examples directly apply to stores that are gun friendly, or not. The trick might be to carrot and stick them, offering a lot of business, but only if they are gun friendly.

Shortly after our shall-issue concealed carry law went into effect several businesses in the area where I live put up signs prohibiting the carrying of firearms. Some pro gun lawyers advised the business owners that by forbidding guns on their property they assumed full responsibility for their patrons safety and if a concealed carry permit holder were injured during a crime on their property they could be held liable. The signs came down. There are none that I know of in this area. I travel around the state a lot and signs forbidding guns on private property are extremely rare. I believe this will not change.

We’re not the ignorant backwater your post implies we are.
Our concealed carry law was a first attempt to bring Mississippi firearms statutes into compliance with the 2A and our state Constitution. With this new amendment we are closer to that goal. We’re quite aware of the 14th Amendment. Even with Heller and McDonald the Incorporation Doctrine hasn’t been fully applied to the 2nd Amendment, largely due to Scalia’s cowardly rationalizing of infringement.

Mississippi, like most state governments, believes the 2nd somehow contains an additional clause along the lines of “...unless the state doesn’t like it or a weapon is concealed.” And as the founders said, the USSC is NOT the final arbiter of what’s constitutional, but the people are. So lofo citizens in every state who are allowing their 2nd amendment right to be trampled need to wake up and straighten their local politicians out as to what “shall not be infringed” means. If the conservative citizens, which make up around 70% of the citizenry got on the same page and didn’t succumb to leftist media propaganda the problem of rights violations could be quickly corrected.
For those of you who think background checks are a good thing, when was the last time you saw or heard of an actual felon going through those hoops, and since criminals don’t why should honest citizens have to? You just allow the government to disarm you and it doesn’t stop the criminals.
There are way too many ‘citizens’ who are ignorant of their rights, the constitution, and how this Republic (note - not democracy) was setup. Time to correct that failing.

We have constitutional carry in AZ. So far, no carnage, no gun battles that I know of. You see 3 kinds of people carrying openly here.

1. People on their way to the range - which is occasionally me.

2. People whose work requires them to carry. There is a pawn shop in uber-liberal Tempe where employees have to handle precious metals all day. The staff carries openly in the store and on the street when they go out to get lunch. Nobody faints. Anti-Preemption laws are a good thing.

3. Accidentally. Shortly after I moved here I was at Walmart and a rather breathless lady with an upper Midwest accent approached me (why me?) and said "There's a man with a gun in the next aisle!" I carefully poked my head around the end-cap and saw a 30's something guy fussing with an infant who was side-addle in a car seat in the the guy's shopping cart. He was voicing his displeasure at the overall state of the world, or maybe he just needed a change. His 2-ish older sister was held in dads right arm, her arms around his neck and looking away in disgust at the behavior of her younger sibling. Mr. Mom's golf shirt had ridden up and the little girl's foot was resting comfortably on the butt of daddy's four o'clock Glock. I tried to comfort the panicked snow bird, telling her that the guy didn't look too dangerous and besides, if he tried to cause any trouble there was probably someone in this aisle with a gun too. In some places Mr. Mom's exposing his firearm like that would have been a criminal offense, even if he had a state license to carry it concealed. I'm glad I live in a tolerant, civilized place.
