BC: Giving out condoms violates policies

Boston College officials threaten to take disciplinary action against Boston College Students for Sexual Health (BCSSH), a group of students who have been distributing condoms out of dorm rooms to other students. The group is not recognized by the university.

“We go through almost 2,000 condoms every semester for students that need them. It is very much an important need here,” said Lizzie Jekanowski, who runs BCSSH.

But now Boston College is threatening to punish the students if they don’t stop giving out condoms because it goes against Catholic values and traditions.

“Our position is that we’re a Catholic university and accordingly there are certain commitments that we have to uphold. So all we’ve asked of our students is that they be respectful of our Catholic traditions and values,” said Jack Dunn, a spokesperson for Boston College. “The dean wrote to the students and said, ‘If you continue in these actions you face disciplinary sanctions.’”

The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, which advises this student group, said Boston College is violating the students’ rights.

Nothing like a Jesuit Pope to remind a “Jesuit” formerly Catholic school what it should be doing.

Fornication is rampant on colleges, as are STDs (at least 1 out of 4), while student debts are "forgiven," not matter how large, if they work (30 hrs. wk min.) in the government or a secular non profit (may not include religious instruction, worship services, or any form of proselytizing, or a labor union or a partisan political organization, but otherwise promoting liberal ideology is likely just fine) non-profit for 10 years, making 120 continuous payments. (See here and here ) At least they get money back that way.

I have heard of this school, but I really have no knowledge of its culture. Just wondering if they have any policies in place that actually nurture moral behavior that is in keeping with Catholic values. Or is this just some defensive reaction because the actions of these condom philanthropists got publicity?

BS. If students want condoms, they can purchase them pretty cheaply at the local CVS or Walgreens or Walmart or the grocery store. The school is not stopping that. They are not entitled to free condoms distributed on campus by some student group.

If it were Lezzie Jekanowski; there be NO 'need' for condoms for her.

I was following a thread at a Christian college among students there advising a young girl who couldn't shake her guilt feelings for having sex. Astoundingly the advice was to “keep on doing it, that in time those feelings would go away”!!!

It was more than astonishing to see others also advise similar.....they have been so indoctrinated, in the school system, that sex is to be pursued ...that by the time they reach college the issue is no longer if or not they should have sex...but how to deal with the consequences or discomfort for doing so.

Also known as "hardening of the heart."

Yes, it's a suppression of the very spirit of God within herself....which was already occurring, before she raised the question of her guilt feelings, for having gone ahead in the first place.
