Vet Wants 'Taps' to Play Nightly—Across Entire US
Newser ^ | 04/04/2013 | By Mark Russell

It's an ambitious plan, to say the least: An Indiana veteran wants "Taps" to be played every single night at dusk—across the entire US, reports the Indianapolis Star. Former Marine Bill Wellman has already convinced Valparaiso, Ind., to pipe the 24 notes over the 50 speakers it has mounted throughout downtown; it'll start doing so this week. And the nearby towns of Portage and Crown Point are considering it, too.

Wellman isn't just motivated by patriotism, though. A subsidiary of the company the lifelong entrepreneur works for offers a digital timing box that typically handles tasks like turning on streetlights automatically; in this new application he dreamed up, "you just set the ZIP code and the local time and add an MP3 file and let it rip," explains the company's VP of technology. But it might be a tough sell: Some people contend that playing "Taps" every day would lessen its power, while others say its somber mood could be a bit of a buzzkill. "We might want 'Taps' reserved for special occasions, like Memorial Day or Veterans Day, and not every night," said one Indianapolis tourism official

First of all, you don't play Taps. You sound Taps.

Secondly....

No.

Hmm... I get the sentiment, but... I don’t think so.

I think Retreat would be more appropriate.

Many a night I rendered a salute to the sound of that tune...

Do we have to paint the trunks of all trees white too?

Seems to be a bunch of army vets around here that do that to their yards.

My FIL (AF vet) did that. I never asked him why.

So why do they do that?

Taps is only appropriate on military bases.

If he wants to argue in favor in Valpo, then they'll be hard pressed to deny muslims their call to prayer.........

slippery slope....

I live about 1 mile from Hunter AAF. We have no problem hearing them playing every trumpet sounding throughout the day, up to and including “taps” at 11:00pm.

Also, at 7:00 am they were playing “The Dog Face Solder” after Revilie

I unknowingly bought a home about 1/3rd of a mile from a womens prison.

No taps but I can hear their sports day announcer.

I have my AlarmDroid set to sound Retreat and To The Colors every evening. Retreat just before and To The Colors right at 1700. Right outside my office window is a big American (and Texas) flag.

That said, if anyone wants it, they can download it on their phones and set it to go off whenever they feel appropriate. I don’t need somebody to sell it to my city.

Nice idea, but no thanks.
In the near future, obama’s speeches would be heard on every street corner. There will be no tuning him off.

Military bases sound Evening Colors at the dusk when the base flag is retired for the day.

Taps is reserved for military honors at funerals and remembrance ceremonies.

Regarless of the sentiment, I disagree with the idea of the gov’t setting up speakers and broadcasting any message.

So THAT’S what the white tree trunk thing is. I frequently pass a house that has a painted tree trunk in their front yard.
