Bum given boots by kind-hearted cop is back to begging barefoot
NY Post ^ | 3/26/2013 | M.L. NESTEL, KEVIN FASICK and BOB FREDERICKS

The barefoot beggar who made headlines when a kindly cop gave him a pair of boots has an apartment and a preacher paying his bills — but he still pretends to be homeless and hides his shoes in a garbage bag, The Post has learned.

Jeffrey Hillman was spotted at 9:20 p.m. Sunday counting a huge wad of bills with the dexterity of a bank teller while riding a No. 2 train from Times Square to his home in The Bronx.

Officer DePrimo's act of kindness made headlines around the world after a passerby snapped this pic on his gift on a frigid winter night.

Asked about his boots, he replied, “I choose not to wear shoes” — even though a New Jersey clergyman who has been paying Hillman’s utility bills said the man owns at least 30 pairs...

The cash appeared to be mostly singles — but still added up to several hundred dollars, judging from the size of the pile...

He is not a Bum, he’s a scam artist, much like the guy in his early twenties begging along the freeway off ramp near my home holding up a sign claiming he was a Desert Storm Vet!

I see a mugging in his future, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

One of the major intersections in Nairobi used to have a kindly, smiling beggar in a wheelchair. He was there every day.

I mentioned him to a friend who said, “Oh, I know who you mean. He is picked up every evening just after 5pm by a man in a Mercedes.”

Still, the cop was moved to do what he -elt was the right thing to do: I remember back 30 to 40 years ago on the Northside o-
Chicago-—similar scam artist who’d walk the streets in a @ilthy black suit, bumming money @rom whomever-—someone I knew who worked in a small theater on this guy’s stomping grounds once worked too late and decided to sleep in a makeshi@t bedroom
annexed to the theater-—he woke up in the middle o@ the night when he @elt someone shaking him-—don’t know how he gained access to the upstairs o@ the theater, but it was this same guy, asking him @or spare change. Scared the hell outta him. It was later divulged that this guy made $200 on most days-—never underestimate the power o@ Liberal Guilt.

The man is likely mentally ill. As a Christian I know that when I interact with a person in need, there is more to every story I am told. It does not prevent me from helping them anyway. Sometimes they take the gift and sometimes there are committed to death.

Whatever you subsidize, you get more of.

Screw the bums. Never gave one cent to a bum.

It’s not my problem.

He sold them for drug/alcohol money so he can continue to sit on the sidewalk and look downtrodden.

Its the story of America. We treat the surface, use emotion, not logic, and use our wealth to enable people in their problems, not help solve them.

People underestimate the amount of wisdom that is needed give away money and actually do good with it..

The bum has a job and works hard at it apparently.
I was in San Francisco in the late 60s and saw so many guys mostly askin for spare change that I became immune to them. Look past, never look them in the eye.
Never look at them as they will rob you if you do. Or seduce you or use their eyes to get you somehow.
Walk on by.

Sorry, as a NYC subway rider, the guy is a scam artist pretending to be homeless. Don’t fall for these bums.

I’m careful of who I help and serve. Some just need a to believe in themselves, a find a path and get a boost on it.

Others are addicts...lost causes to anything beyond professional rehab and healing. Others are insane and need treatment before they can be helped.

Nudges from the Holy Spirit tends to pick the people I am to help. It’s just regular Joes down on their luck who need some loving. For example, I gave to a mom who came who traveled far to the hospital for cancer treatment. She asked the receptionist if there was a charity fund to help pay for the gas expense because the cost of gas was competing with the food budget. Her sick husband was out of work...The receptionist told her there as no charity for traveling costs. Four beautiful little kids...dad beaten down with cancer... That is how I give charity.
