WASHINGTON | Two freshman Democratic senators from conservative states, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, have joined the growing chorus of lawmakers who say they support gay marriage.
In separate statements released minutes apart on Friday, the senators said their views on the issue had evolved. They joined a rapidly growing list of senators who support gay marriage and the list now includes 49 Democrats, two independents who caucus with Democrats and two Republicans.

Before you start crying about Mourdock, what do you think would have happened if the people of Indiana had known about Donnelly’s evolving views on gay marriage?
Lugie was an idiot and a democrat. I’m glad he’s gone. Hope the people of Indiana have the sense to correct their mistake.
I say good riddance. I’m sure Lugar would have “evolved” into supporting gay marriage by now.
It’s a fat participant in a “Gay Pride” parade.
And then they wonder why...freaks!
This is on the party. They misjudged the level of dislike for the establishment that was happening at that time. Mourdock was the only one to buck the party. Had the party taken more of a reasonable approach, a better candidate might have been found. Becky Skillman could have been a good, solid, likeable candidate. But no.
The party did the same thing all those years against Julia Carson, when it went of its way not to support whoever was running against her.
It’s a shame that more people don’t see those pics. They’d change their minds on homosexual marriage.
I watched a video posted on FR of a parade I think In Calf. Though warned it was pretty graphic I wanted to see just exactly what they were......it was beyond shocking what these people do to each other in full view of the parade watchers. I’ve never forgotten those images, though in some ways I wish I hadn’t seen them...but truth is what it is.
I voted for Mourdock in the primary and the general.
But somehow we HAVE to send these conservative candidates to boot camp to learn to deal with journ-0-list attacks.
Let’s face it - even rank amateurs like myself knew that journ-0-list Stephanopolus signaled the “war on women” theme back in Jan 2012.
We traded an 80% Republican for a 97% Baraqqi for 6 years.
That’s a terrible outcome.
I’m not sticking up for Lugar; he was a first-class RINO.
I think the problem was that Lugar had been around so long, that most of the people in the Indiana GOP heirarchy looked at him as a father figure. They all worked on one of his campaigns when they were in college and thinking about careers in politics. Nobody of stature had the balls to go to him quietly and tell him his time was up and he needed to retire gracefully.
Mourdock ran as an outsider, and even after the primary I don’t think he was embraced by the Party. He certainly wasn’t getting top-flight coaching. Good conservative, terrible candidate. Even before the abortion gaffe at the debate, his election was by no means certain. Donnelly on the other hand, was a good candidate. He was very good at portraying Mourdock as a “right wing extremist” and Mourdock was always on the defensive. We all knew Donnelly was an in-the-tank party apparatchik who would toe the Party Line. It wasn’t sold to the public.
So yes, this one is on the Party. Old guys like Lugar who are done need to be politely retired. New guys need to be waiting in the wings. We did pretty well with replacing Daniels with Pence in the governor’s office. Becky Skillman would have been a good candidate to replace Lugar.
As for Julia Carson, she was unbeatable. She had the most corrupt political machine in place to run a gerrymandered district designed to elect her forever. Andy Jacobs saw the writing on the wall and left office rather than get whacked by her in a primary. It doesn’t matter who the GOP runs for that seat, it is as solidly democrat as any other urban district. It will always be held by someone whose job is to “redistribute the wealth,” or as the early 80’s campaign slogan of Richard Hatcher in Gary stated: “Let’s get it ALL together!”
A lot is hidden from the public. Reports on those parades are extremely sanitized. All hell would break loose if the truth were known.
If that’s the case, then our system is regarded by people who still value truth as a farce and the cogs that drive the economy rust up and cease to function. (At least in a world where people put their money where their mouth is.)
Unfortunately our society has become so depraved what is “evil” is certainly called “good” and “good” “evil”......there are no lines anymore....unless you choose good.
The parents that support homosexuals don’t really know what they’re supporting. The truth is hidden.
And the stupid people of Indiana put Donnelly in office. SMH
I've been listening to news stations outside the US for over a year now....our country has stopped “reporting” news, rather we have to listen to the
“chatter” amongst themselves which of course then muddies any report.
Another thing...other nations news stations can show and report what our news never would...admittedly they will “select” what they report on..but at least you get a broader true picture. In the US it's all about the pundits getting face time...or competing for it. Frankly..I don't think there's much truth anywhere today....and what we should know his "Hidden"..just as you say.
I stand by believing that if parents actually had a true picture of homosexuality they'd flip out. We could start by being honest that life expectancy is 57 years and finish with the range of diseases.
No I didn’t see it DJ....I was off line for over a year and only recently back. I missed the whole election on FR!!!!
I like how gullible Republicans assume that just because a Democrat is conservative on ONE issue (like for Heitkamp and Landrieu, the Keystone pipeline) that suddenly they’re a “moderate” or “conservative”. No, it means they’re a liberal who happens to agree with us on one issue.
