The gloomy headlines for Caterpillar Inc. continue.
The Peoria, Ill.-based equipment manufacturer (NYSE: CAT) said Friday its laying off 460 workers at its plant in Decatur, Ill., or 11 percent of the work force there, according to various media reports.
The announcement comes a week after Caterpillar said it would temporarily cut up to 300 production jobs in South Milwaukee, or about 40 percent of the unionized work force there.
But the Decatur cuts are permanent, Reuters reported.
The company has cited a need to bring production in line with demand in both decisions.
The series of actions include some short-term temporary layoffs and other actions that impact both production and support and management employees at various locations, Caterpillar has said.
At the same time, Caterpillar has begun contract negotiations with local representatives of the United Steelworkers union, which represents about 800 workers in South Milwaukee. The current contract expires at the end of April.
There was some tension before negotiations even started. Read more here.

Wow. looks like that Obama recovery is kicking into high gear..
Wisconsin has crappy union laws but it is improving as a business climate, over Illinois. Wish Walker would get off his ass and push for a right to work agenda. Kind of feel he’s a scared, limp dick after only partially doing something against the public unions.
Cut Walker some slack after all that garbage he withstood from leftist unionist hacks and he prevailed in deeply divided WI.
Obamanomics works.
For communist haters of America that is.
Time to empty out the White Hut.
It’s fumigation time!

Men worked in America once (once't .. in WV) and yard whistles called out shift changes.
The roads'd be filled with one car space in between each other, whizzin' along at 65 or 70 (in the days of double nickles)
I almost used't LOVE to drive in the opposite direction an' get to rythmickin' with the sound of the cars 'whishin' by of the workers goin' home.
Once't .... in America.
Caterpillar has had BAD union relations since before I was born. One strike in the late 70’s in particular put 1/10 of the entire taxable real estate of of Peoria in technical foreclosure.
That's ridiculously harsh considering what he has accomplished.
Nobody can meet the high standards of some FReepers.
They trashed Mitch Daniels and he brought us RTW, a budget surplus, and Republican supermajorities in the Indiana House and Senate.

they haven’t pushed for anythng serious since then. they are scared to take on anything else major while they can. he’s too busy mulling 2016. unfortunately.
tort reform/frivolous lawsuits would be an excellent thing to tackle. right towork, another one. there’s not even a peep from anyone regarding the white guilt classes in the uw-system now. they could do something to reform the corrupt elections board. they could revise the law that lets people file state level lkawsuits outside of dane county courts. they could ensure if democrats ever flee the state again to prevent a quorum, those present will automatically constitute a quorum.
they could finally figure out a coherent legal strategy to the democrats who bring lawsuits for every law they pass.
plenty of things to do. not doing any of it. i would prefer he doesn’t take the second half of his term to mutely run out the clock.
i live here, i have cut him slack. now his agenda is nothing. i would like to see him go balls out but it’s his decision to phone thge last two yearsin, and i am callkig it like i see it. he is going to sit and waste his opportunity, and no oither republcn senator or rep has any strong plas to do any serious reform anywhere. what’s the point. pissing away your power for real, lasting change.
you overlook reality when you wear blinders that permit only tunnel vision.
Remember...... politics is the art of the possible.
i don’t have blinders on. an agenda of nothing isn’t what we need the next two years.

Caterpillar needs to move out of IL. Ditto for United Airlines, Boeing Corporate, State Farm Insurance, and Sears Holdings.
