FORT BLISS, Texas -- A West Texas military base said Friday it plans to build the U.S. military's largest solar energy farm.
Fort Bliss commander Gen. Dana Pittard made the announcement and touted the Army base's other green initiatives, including planting 14,700 trees, encouraging the use of energy-efficient vehicles and building bicycle lanes.
The Army wants to generate about one gigawatt of power from renewable energies by 2025 -about a tenth of its total consumption or enough power to supply at least 250,000 homes. However, Fort Bliss decided to take it even further and plans to become a "net zero" installation by 2018, meaning the base will generate all the energy it uses, between 65 to 70 megawatts.
Once completed, the 200-acre solar farm is expected to generate 20 megawatts of electricity, about a third of the base's needs. It will join a 1.4 megawatt solar farm that currently sits a few hundred yards from Fort Bliss' headquarters and a 13.4 megawatt array of solar panels already installed on the rooftops of residential buildings and other areas around the base.
It's the first time the Army has partnered with a local utility on a renewable energy project of this size - about 94,000 solar panels. El Paso Electric will select the developer and construction is expected to begin by the end of 2014 and finish a year later.
The final cost will be determined after proposals are submitted to the utility.
BJ Tomlinson, Fort Bliss' renewable energy & sustainable engineering program manager, said it would roughly cost $120 million.

Less blow, more grow. Today's Army.
and this comes out of the DoD budget does it?
Growing trees in El Paso. Good idea. Water is plentiful and cheap there anyway.
We all know that is a lie. In the end we will be lucky if it only costs 100 times that amount.
Solar cell panels are EMP antennas that will be rendered totally useless in the first microsecond of an attack.
A global force for Gaia.

Well, there is a lot of nothing down there. The last time I worked at Ft.Bliss/White Sands I discovered that anywhere you had to go was at least 20 miles from where you were, usually on crap roads.
Does this mean that every Soldier at Fort Bliss gets $50,000 because he couldn’t grow any pigs there because the Department of Agriculture would have been prejudiced against them if there were any pigs there and they knew how to raise them but whitey keeps you down and there’s no rutabagas to feed the make believe pigs and the rutabagas are make believe too but not the money....oh no.....the money’s as real as Justin Beiber’s monkey and what is it with these singers and their monkeys and oh yeah we were going on about fake pigs and fake pig farmers and cutting the defense budget so we can give money to I don’t know some fake giraffe farmers so they’ll give money to the Democrat party so why don’t we just skip the middlemen and give Nancy Pelosi a case of Scotch and Harry Reid a case of VD and we’ll all be happy.
And this helps the Army to kill and break things? And at what cost?
Couldn’t they just build a small nuclear power plant similar to what we put in our subs and aircraft carriers?
Seems like Ft. Bliss should be very busy integrating drone weapons into the Army’s air defense.
Or doing any other thing that has to do with air defense..
Not offering sacrifices to Mother Earth... that would be an infantry role IMO.
Best Post Ever!!! ROFLMAO
I can’t believe this is true. Has to be a joke.
