7.2 Magnitude (preliminary) Earthquake, Papua, Indonesia [update 7.1]
Jemian, in Papua | 6 April | Jemian

Posted on 04/05/2013 10:07:50 PM PDT by Jemian

At approximately 1345 local time, the town of Sentani was rocked for around 1 minute by a 7.2 earthquake. The epicenter was 240 kilometers WSW of Abepura. At present we have no reports of damage. Papua is Indonesia's easternmost and least populated province. It is expected that minimal damage occurred as the location is in the interior jungle rather than in one of the more populated areas.

No aftershocks yet, that I have noticed. I’m expecting some. I’m waiting for damage reports from the interior now. Those may take awhile.

Yes, my husband is the band director at HIS and also teaches World History on the high school level as well as LA to the 8th grade.

I teach 6th and 7th Bible and I am the HIS webmaster.

I love the work I do. I love interacting with missionary kids. I cannot imagine doing anything else.

Praise The Lord. So wonderful to “ meet” you here on FR.
I’ve been a Freeper for a long time. Many wonderful believers here.
As I stated on the thread, I’m a senior citizen and had a missionary brother. We were a mission focused family.
Your compound looks marvelous!!

Small world...I too attended Christian Missionary Alliance while raising children....but I’ve lived in many areas since leaving my home town, and attended other churches along the way. None can go wrong attending CMA. Course that will always depend on the man in the pulpit too.

I learned of New Tribes Mission from A retired Pastor of Moody Bible Institute who worked at our company (then)....and who was instrumental in my salvation.

Thanks for the link....

And I saw it was about 36 miles deep so that helps also. Glad you are okay.

It is wonderful to meet you, as well. I got started on FR way back in the early days around ‘97, but didn’t register until ‘98. I used to hang out on the now-abandoned America - the Right Way! daily thread. Now, I’m sort of hit-and-miss. You have a few years on me, but I, too, get senior citizen discounts.

I so greatly appreciate mission-minded people. We have a duty to the perishing who will burn in hell without God. As Christians we are all missionaries, either good ones, or bad ones, but we all have the mandate.

I can’t wait to meet you in person, here, there, or in the air!

Thank you. The dog barked just a few minutes ago, but so far, still no aftershocks.

How wonderful is that! Isn't New Tribes affiliated with Wycliffe Bible Translators, I vaguely remember now...it was back when raising my sons.

Interesting while my family was attending Christian Missionary Alliance one of the members decided God was calling her to mission work..at 65yrs.old! Her name was “Lucy”....she went thru all the training with Wycliffe and off she went!......I was so moved by her willingness and stamina to undertake that challenge at that time of her life.

You live in a land made for martinis...always shaken, never stirred. I can't imagine living in place that has that number of earthquakes. It must be "exciting".

Well caww, we love to listen to the ministry of Erwin Lutzer , Pastor at Moody Bible Church every Sunday. So rich in God’s Word.
We live in Los Angeles, and have been members of Lake Ave Church since Ray Ortlund days.

How wonderful that you were brought to the Lord through a retired Moody pastor.

.....” As Christians we are all missionaries, either good ones, or bad ones, but we all have the mandate.”.....

Jemian..I am so thrilled to be on this thread...and to meet you here....who’d of thought checking out an earthquake report would be the draw!

You are so right we’re missionaries. A church I visited has over the archway, as your LEAVING the church, a sign which reads...”You Are Now Entering the Mission Field”.

As to affiliations, I sponsored by Wycliffe. I consider that I am part of the larger Bible translation team here although I am not assigned to a specific language project and only work with missionary kids. I don’t recall whether New Tribes has an association with Wycliffe on an official level.

But, when people get here our alphabet affiliations don’t seem to matter. We pray for each other and run errands for and with each other. Our school has students from all the groups here and we work together to advance God’s kingdom. I am glad Lucy joined the Wycliffe team. We have a goal of having a language translation project started for every language that needs one by the year 2025. As for Lucy being 65, well, ya’ gotta die somewhere! What do you want to be doing when you do die? (But cross-cultural adjustment does get harder, the older you are)

You live in the interior jungle.

How cool that must be.

It is exciting sometimes. About 10 years ago I took a group of students to the geophysics office. They told me we sit on the convergence of three tectonic plates and that we have an average of about 50 ‘quakes per day. We don’t feel even one quake per day. So, there is a bit of movement that is too small for humans to register.

No, I live on the coast on the side of Mount Cyclops. I am about an hour’s drive from the beach where MacArthur came ashore.

Oh wow!....I know the names you mentioned very well... It's a wonderful thing knowing what one is hears is solid and reaches the soul. I listen to Moody's on- line...along with others like Ravi Zacharias, always excellent instruction.

I'm in Pa. now for almost five years....but have lived in Florida, Rhode Island, Ohio, New Jersey and various places throughout Pa. This is next to the longest place I've been in....I really needed to settle down for awhile...over 32 moves throughout my life!

Yes, it was wonderful to have come to know the Lord thru this man and his wife. Wonderful people, though at the time I had no knowledge of Moody or about. Many nights I sat at their table asking questions....as the Bible made so clear the things I needed answers to.

They have passed on now....and my children grown men with families...but they remain dear to my heart to this day.

Working with missionary kids is on equal par with those who go into the field Imo. ...and in many respects as greater feat...you have many tongues, personalities and mannerisms to discern.... Not to mention giving the parents assurance and the opportunity to do their work without concerns for their children's safety and well being....sounds like it's really a great team there...

That's an awesome goal to reach.....and no doubt challenging. How many languages are there in the interior there?

Your comment of Lucy is right on! Gives one thought as well...thank you....and trusting you and yours will all be safe there without too much damage...I'm going to check your page here on FR.

May the Lord truly Bless your work in all ways....and according to His great Riches.....

Caw
