7.2 Magnitude (preliminary) Earthquake, Papua, Indonesia [update 7.1]
Jemian, in Papua | 6 April | Jemian

Posted on 04/05/2013 10:07:50 PM PDT by Jemian

At approximately 1345 local time, the town of Sentani was rocked for around 1 minute by a 7.2 earthquake. The epicenter was 240 kilometers WSW of Abepura. At present we have no reports of damage. Papua is Indonesia's easternmost and least populated province. It is expected that minimal damage occurred as the location is in the interior jungle rather than in one of the more populated areas.

Seems the bells are ringing in your longitude.

Here is an awesome way to view Earthquake Activity. You can see patterns worldwide, all at the same time.

Just go to link, download the program (very small program, takes 2 seconds), then run it.

I think you’ll like it.

It’s called EARTHQUAKE 3D.

Thank you. The latest survey puts the number of languages here in Papua at a little more than 250. Some have New Testaments already, a few have the complete Bible. There are a number of translation projects underway. But there is a great need and the people have been waiting for over 2000 years to read God’s Word.

I have an earthquake app on my cell phone. It paints a circle around the epicenter that is proportional to the size of the quake. Your recent one is currently rated 7.0. Still a big quake. Take care.

I’ll have to switch computers to run it; I’ve got a Mac. But it looks intriguing. I’m fascinated by earthquakes.

Glad you’re okay. I did some work at the Freeport Gold & Copper mine years ago, amazing country. Hope the mine fared okay - they weren’t too concerned to engineer some of it for large earthquakes.

It’s on the other side of the mountains. I’m thinking this was nearer to Wamena or Mulia. I bet the mine didn’t feel it.

A short update. It’s Sunday morning here. I’ve been scouring reports from people living closer to the epicenter. There is nothing to report. There have been smaller aftershocks, but basically, the jungle has rocked and that is about it. Bear in mind that these places don’t have electricity. There are no roads in or out. No communication unless someone hikes in and out. There are also no pipes to burst, no skyscrapers to fall on one’s head, just trees and mountains and more trees. All that is to say that if someone was injured by the quake, it may be days before we learn of it.

Unless something new is learned, I won’t be updating this thread.
