(Reuters) - Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, one of the nation's most prominent Republicans and a possible 2016 presidential candidate, has fallen out of favor with local voters, and his bold plan to scrap the state income tax is running into trouble.
Jindal was re-elected to a second term with two-thirds of the vote in 2011. But his Louisiana approval rating was down to 38 percent in a recent poll, worse than Democratic President Barack Obama in one of the most conservative states.
The poll suggested voters think he is spending more time traveling outside the state and burnishing his credentials for a possible White House run than tending to local matters.
As the Louisiana Legislature prepares to kick off its two-month session on Monday, Jindal's signature proposal to eliminate the state income tax is facing resistance.
His detailed plan would do away with all state personal and corporate income taxes. It also calls for a 56-percent increase in the state sales tax, a much higher cigarette tax, and the elimination of some tax loopholes to make up the $3 billion shortfall from scrapping the income taxes.
To allay fears that the plan would hurt the poor, Jindal has proposed a rebate for low-income residents and some retirees.
The governor says the change would attract business by making Louisiana competitive with states such as oil-rich neighbor Texas, which has no income tax.
In speeches across the state, he has cast it as a way to simplify the system, make it fairer, and give people more control over their own money.

Wow, Jindal's a busy guy....he's losing popularity because he's spending too much time outside the State while he's traveling the State making speeches. Oh, and his plan to abolish State income taxes is making the poor nervous. Really?

Really. Because the poor don’t pay any income taxes. And they’re nervous because they believe that if the rich aren’t taxed enough ( i.e. “paying their fair share”), the goodies they have been getting for free from the state of Louisiana will diminish.

RE: Total elimination cuts down the regulations and paperwork for business and the working poor. And also eliminates fat government paychecks and bennies for bureaucratic parasites.
OK, who has the guts and intelligence to explain this to the low information voters of America in a way that they can understand?
There are more people that vote for a living in Louisiana than people who work for a living. The parasites are concerned about their host's blood supply.
As their Democrat masters have instructed, the media has done a wonderful job of painting Jindal in the worst possible light.

Well, Jindal won two elections by a huge margin. And Louisiana went Romney in 2012 if I recall correctly.
This is nothing but media carpet-bombing.

I am continually appalled that the feds have gotten way with the income tax for so many years. it is illegal theft and far beyond what the founders fought against to establish this once free country.

“The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.”
That’s the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
It was ratified on February 3, 1913. Former Princeton Prof. Woodrow Wilson was President then.
It had precedents. The Democratic Party, led by William Jennings Bryan, advocated the income tax law passed in 1894, and proposed an income tax in its 1908 platform, it became part of our constitution 4 years later.
Want to repeal it?
YOU’ll have to fight for another constitutional amendment to repeal the 16th Amendment. Good Luck with that.
Our Constitution is a marvelous document. But I personally think that several things need to be repealed.
Here are two that come to mind:
1) Automatic Citizenship by Birth regardless of the legal status of your parents
2) The 16th Amendment.

Uh-oh. If Jindal is left only with the support of those who get up and go to work and pay income taxes, he’s in trouble. The parasites outnumber the hosts now. America is dead. The Democrats have won.
No question it was a push poll by somebody with their filthy paws in the public wallet.
