Drew Barrymore on Making Sacrifices for Daughter Olive: I Don't Think Women Can Have It All
Us Weekly ^ | April 5, 2013 | Allison Takeda

Later, during one of the panel discussions at the conference, the Big Miracle star, 38, said she walked away from some of her goals because she didn't want to be absent for any of the big moments in Olive's childhood. "You know that you're going to miss out on your child’s upbringing or you realize that your relationship is going to suffer if you work night and day and weekends," she explained. (Barrymore married art consultant Will Kopelman in June 2012 in Montecito, Calif.)

"Unfortunately, I was raised in this like generation of like, 'Women can have it all,' and I don’t think you can. I think some things fall off the table," she said. "The good news is, what does stay on the table becomes much more important."

Good for her wanting to be with her child. I just hope she can drop the excessive usage of "like" that is too commonplace with todays yoots. this like generation of like

Even if I agree with, I don’t care what wealthy celebrities think.

According to some perfect individuals, she’s beyond redemption.

Drew Barrymore states the obvious.

The media swoons.

The obvious is rare in the community she rolls with. She actually seems to be one of the more well adjusted celebs considering how her childhood was and how completely dysfunctional her family was.

re: “Good for her wanting to be with her child.”

Yes - I totally agree with you. What angers me about some Freepers (not you ConservativeStatement) is they often rightly mock celebrities for their shallowness, naivety, and hypocracy - but then when one of them “gets it” and admits publicly that they had a wrong view of the world, and give excellent reasons why they changed - they still get dissed by the same Freepers who were trashing them earlier about “not getting it”.

Yes, Barrymore is finally understanding the obvious, but like she said, she was raised, along with an entire generation of other women, with this lunacy of “women can have a career and success outside of the home and her family, and raise great kids, too”. She repudiates that idea publicly, admits she saw that this was a fallacy, which although it may be obvious to you, unfortunately it’s not to many younger women because of all the crap they’ve been fed for the past 50 years - then some of you diss her anyway because she didn’t see the truth like you.

Also, just because some people could care less what celebrities think, unfortunately many others do and they have wide influence. As you know most of that influence is negative - why not at least give the girl her due for speaking up against the grain of her generation when she gives the truth?

THAT attitude I just don’t understand.

Congratulations to Ms. Barrymore for a) wanting to have it all, b) pursuing that to the best of her ability, and then c) reaching the conclusion that it isn’t possible and making the choices that need to be made.

I think many women are finally getting this.

They’re realizing that having it all results in a life of low quality and utter exhaustion.

I think we agree there are too many people who gets their news and opinions from places such as Kelly Ripa, the View and others who fawn over celebs.

My final post on this issue:

When Brian Boitano travelled through time
To the year 3010,
He fought the evil robot kings
And saved the human race again

Only took her 38 years to develop some maturity; many celebraties never do. Pray she doesn’t regress.

I have a little game I play when I’m transporting Boy Scouts to summer camp, and back. Invariably there will be one 15-16 year old in the vehicle who can not utter more than two words in a row without one being “like.”

I challenge them to speak without using the word and get all the other boys in on the gag. They typically become completely tongue-tied! It makes for a much quieter ride!

Great post! It took guts for Barrymore to say what she did and to go against the Hollywood crowd. I’m happy she spoke out.
