[South Texas:]Illegal Immigrant Bailout on Hwy 286

CORPUS CHRISTI - There are often stories on human smuggling attempts that, many times, end in injury or death for the immigrants. It's not often, though, that you hear from the immigrants themselves.

A 47-year-old man from El Salvador was just one of 12 illegal immigrants police captured Saturday night trying to make it in the U.S. In Spanish he told Six News everyone is trying to leave his country.

Saturday night a Nueces County Deputy tried to pull over a four-by-four after he caught it swerving in the road. When the truck stopped, illegal immigrants bailed out and scattered. Police caught two of the immigrants Saturday night but continued their search on Sunday after someone spotted the men in the brush near Cabaniss Field.

With help from Border Patrol, Deputies, Corpus Christi Police Officers and DPS helicopters, they were able to track the remaining illegal immigrants down.

One man said the last time he ate was some time on Friday, two days prior to the meal officers gave him Sunday. Police officers said all of the immigrants were scared, hungry and reluctant to go into police custody where officers handed them tacos and water. While every man had a different goal once they crossed the U.S., Mexico border.

The immigrant from El Salvador said he wanted to go to California to get a job as a field worker. It's a dangerous trek many illegal immigrants decide to make whether they're from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras or another country.

The man said each person involved in the bailout payed $7,000 in their money for this trip in hopes of a better life. Now, however, they'll have to go back. As for what's next, one illegal immigrant said, "only God knows." Border Patrol will likely take the immigrants and process them before deportation.

Wow, $7K ???

It will be a while before he saves that up again. Would be ironic is the amnesty fines are less than that,

“police custody where officers handed them tacos and water”

How about sending them back where they came from?

...officers handed them tacos and water.

Jeez! Talk about stereotyping! "Hey, he's Hispanic...won't he just love a taco!" Maybe the poor guy came to the US because he was sick and tired of tacos and water. Maybe he came to the US because he wanted pizza and beer!

Well, you never can tell! :)

“Border Patrol will likely take the immigrants and process them before deportation.”

Doubtful. About a dozen illegals were released this weekend in the RGV. They were reported to be at a bus station trying to earn money to continue their journeys.

Yeah, but they can make it back pretty quick once all these new gun laws go into effect. Mexicans will learn very quickly criminals don't want traceable guns and start bringing them across the boarder by the truck load.

Someone should air-drop them a couple of million compasses with "N" and "S" reversed...
