According to internal documents obtained by Air Force Times, beginning on Apr. 9, 2013, the U.S. Air Force will begin grounding front line combat units as a consequence of sequestration and the need to deal with budget cuts.
Seventeen squadrons belonging to the various U.S. Air Force commands are going to be affected by the stand down order.
The grounding is aimed to save the 44,000 flying hours (worth 591 million USD) through September.
The funded 241,496 flying hours will be distributed to those squadrons that will remain combat ready or are expected to keep a reduced readiness level called “basic mission capable” until the end of the Fiscal Year 2013.

They flew in the families (the willing ones) from Sandy Hook Elementary, to (testify) and be exploited today in the PR campaign against our Right to Keep and Bear Arms today in D.C. onboard AF1...
All throughout my 28 years in the Air Force, never did I once, even through the disastrous Carter years, envision 17 squadrons grounded because of budgetary problems... especially as we face a possible ramping up to conflict in the Far East.
We are in a very different world now.

Having been through the Clinton years, and taking the RIF in ‘96, I HAVE seen this before. They didn’t “Officially” ground them, but they didn’t have spares, and some flying was down to less than 3 hours, A MONTH, barely enough to maintain cert.
When Kosovo came, they were cannibalizing stateside aircraft to the bone, to keep the aircraft in Italy going. The rebuild line at Nellis actually stopped for weeks, (full pay, of course), due to lack of parts.
In 1962 we still had a blue Link Trainer in our high school, along with some full size wooden props, and complete radial engines with, IIRC a cut-away cylinder. Course, we also had an armory and shooting range in the main building.
Send them all home.We have not used them for years.
