Senate: Time to raise pay for Minnesota's lawmakers
Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | April 16, 2013 | Rachel Stassen-Berger

The Minnesota Senate on Tuesday is set to approve salary increases for legislators and the governor, who have had their pay frozen since 1999.

The raises, which would start taking effect in 2015, would be hefty. By 2016, legislators’ pay would go to $42,000 from the current $31,000 — an increase of 35 percent. The governor’s salary would rise to $128,000 a year from $120,000 now, although Gov. Mark Dayton has already said he would donate his increase.

The move heats up a reliable hot potato. For 15 years, politics have kept lawmakers from approving pay increases for themselves or the governor. Senators believe, despite the political risk, the frozen pay must thaw.

“It’s leadership,” said Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook. “It probably won’t be very popular with Minnesotans … but sometimes leadership is a little lonely.”

Yeah, Senator Bakk. Voting yourself a 35 percent pay raise in the middle of the worst economy in seventy years is real 'leadership'.

I’ve never understood why Congressmen that supposedly only earn $120K (or other similar figures) manage to live in $2 - $5 million dollar mansions, drives high end vehicles, and spend like there is no morrow.../s

More fodder for the mid terms. “while your family is taking pay cuts and loosing jobs.. while your family is trying to find the money for gas and food... While you worry how the bills are going to be paid... State Senator Bakk was voting himself a pay raise with your money. Call Senator Bakk and tell him what you think at (651) 296-8881” this message paid for by people who understand your plight.

No really. call him. Be nice but tell um he’s an idiot.

Thing of it is, $41,000 a year is a nice chunk of change for a part time job.

No.

They need a salary REDUCTION. Most Americans have faced pay cuts and layoffs and the geniuses in the legislative arm need to realize that eletive office is NOT A JOB!!!

If you ask these legislators, they’ll say their job is full time.

Putting up with their nonsense is a full-time job. For me.

All senates and congresses, state and federal are pig stys for parasites sucking off the public teat.
They should all be part time with minimum staffs, low pay and no benefits.

They should not be lifetime careers slopping at the public trough.

Its important to publish these things — everyone can make their own judgment on whether the salaries are excessive. To me, the Senate salaries seem excessive for part time work but the governor’s salary of $128K per year doesn’t seem bad.

Mark Dayton would be too expensive at a quarter of the cost.

He’s doing a great job of reminding us why Minnesota went 25 years without electing a Democrat governor.

Dayton could pay us for his job.

he’d still cost to much. With ND/SD/WI (and I think IA) headed in the right direction all they are doing is running business out of the state.

Our elected idiots forget about Hudson WI. Most people would be happy to drive across the bridge to work.
