Last year, the University of Colorado-Boulder made national headlines for its efforts to stamp out what has historically been one of the most popular days on campus — the 4/20 marijuana smokeout, which in the past has drawn up to 11,000 pot smokers who toke up on the university’s quad at 4:20 p.m. on April 20.
Determined to see an end to the tradition, university officials took the unusual step of closing the campus to nonstudents and hosing down the lawn with a fish-based fertilizer that made the quad smell as appealing as an Alaskan pier.
Activists were outraged, but the school’s efforts paid off so well that they’ve announced a repeat of the measures this year (minus the fish fertilizer).
But with the passage in November of Amendment 64, which legalized recreational marijuana use by those 21 and older, people might not even notice that CU is largely pot-free.
That’s because practically every other corner of the state will be Rocky Mountain High with the celebratory toking of locals and visitors alike as this year’s 4/20 celebration is likely to dwarf anything seen in the past.
Colorado is bracing for thousands of out-of-state tourists who will take advantage of the new law, with 50,000 people expected for a smoke-out at Civic Center Park near the state capitol in Denver Saturday, and thousands more to attend the High Times’ Cannabis Cup competition, the first such non-medical event to be held in the United States.
Although it’s still illegal to smoke in public, police are expected to follow the same protocol as they have during past outdoor 4/20 celebrations and largely look the other way. The sheer numbers of pot smokers give officers little choice.

I could celebrate earth day 4-22 and 4-20 at the same time by burning a tire for earth day, the great smoke in and also put some CO2 in the atmosphere to help melt my 16” of global warming.
But not loud enough and long enough to drown out the "need" for new revenue.
Why should CU officials bother?
With the science/engineering/math departments excepted, the rest of the university is a cookie cutter collection of samo-samo liberal losers incapable of holding a job in the real world. Of course, CU is not different than other large universities - the sad part is that it is very much the same.

The politicians have it figured out. Here in Washington the tax man will levy a 25% tax on pot at every level of transaction. Grower-25%-Wholesaler-25%-Retailer-25% + any sales and B & O tax on top of that. (We don’t have an income tax so many cities enact a much hated B & O tax, Business and Occupation at around 8% and the average sales tax is about 9%) The law prohibits a grower from being a wholesaler-retailer, each level must be a stand alone entity. Can’t short-cut the tax stream dontcha know!

Also, the Fed’s will not allow any business deductions so who will grow pot for the legal market for free or rather it will cost a grower to produce for the state. LOL!

You bring up very interesting points about the government taxing the crap out of marijuana. Lets look what happens when Bloom-ing Idiot taxes cigarettes in New York City. I'm told US cigs are $5 a carton when not taxed. That is right, 50 cents a pack. But a carton in NYC is $140. That is $135 in tax, or $13.50 a pack.
So what is the obvious solution for smokers? That's right. The Black Market. And when New York sends smokers to the Black Market, who benefits? That's right. Terrorists.

Back to marijuana. Legal or illegal; its quite clear the Cartels are going to profit here. If a state is stupid enough to legalize it they will have to subsidize it. If they are stupid enough to tax it - you can be sure the Cartels will funnel more and more drugs to idiot tokers at a lower cost.
There are a million reasons to keep marijuana illegal. This is just one.

CU is a different story, but not because they are prudes about pot. It's well known that CU and Boulder police will try to break up any large gathering of students, usually calling it a "riot," whether there is any misbehavior or not.
They would have to subsidize it to undercut the Cartels. Naturally - that won’t happen - the State will tax it. Like cigarettes.
But faced with a choice of paying $15 for a (legal easy to get) joint or $5 for a (illegal easy to get) joint, what will people do?
No, they merely have to refrain from taxing it out the wazoo. Moonshine is a negligible part of the alcohol market despite no subsidies for legal alcohol.
During Prohibition we had illegal booze coming in through Canada. After the 21st, suddenly illegal manufactorers and distillers were now legal corporations. Paying taxes and everyone’s happy.
During marijuana prohibition we have illegal dope coming accross the border from Mexico or even grown here in the states by the Cartels. If we legalize it, suddenly the Cartels will become legal corporations paying taxes.
